What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Signal Technician I position at City of Greenville, NC?
Under direct supervision, skilled work is performed in installing and maintaining traffic signals and other electrical traffic control devices.

Examples of Duties
- Assists in performing preventive and scheduled maintenance activities for traffic signals and traffic signal fiber optic system;
- Assists in performing other maintenance activities, basic emergency repairs, and supports in the installation of electronic devices;
- Assists in monitoring and testing traffic control system to resolve technical problems and restore operating services;
- Assists in performing basic electrical duties and troubleshoots component and electrical malfunctions;
- Studies intersection and cabinet blueprints, wiring diagrams, and specifications to determine the system's design parameters;
- Assists in consulting with contractors to ensure traffic signals and associated work are built properly and comply with City standards and requirements;
- Assists with sign installations and setting up road closures and detours for special events and emergencies as needed;
- Assists with utility locating pertaining to signalized intersections and other City-wide electrical systems;
- Maintains a materials inventory;
- Maintains files and daily record logs pertaining to various projects and activities;
- Participates in rotational emergency call-out duty;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Related coursework beyond High school (Associate's degree in electronics systems technology, electronics engineering technology, or a closely related field preferred); and
- At least six (6) months of experience in an electrical trade, traffic control work or closely related field.
- IMSA Certification (preferred but not required).
- High school diploma or GED; and
- At least one (1) year experience in an electrical trade, traffic control work or closely related field.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- methods and practices used in installing and maintaining traffic signals.
- the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electronic trade.
- standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of electrical and electronic repair.
- the locations of streets and intersections in the City.
- the use of manual and electronic equipment to perform emergency and preventive maintenance on traffic signal equipment.
- diagnose equipment failures.
- read and interpret traffic signal plans and wiring diagrams.
- read and interpret electrical and electronic diagrams.
- operate a computer and related technology.
- operate a bucket truck in and over traffic in a safe manner.
- communicate effectively in both written and oral fashion.
- prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, the general public, and other employees.
- work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- meet mental and physical demands of the job.
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- Valid Class A or B North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required within 90 days of hire.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level I certification or the ability to acquire after 1 year of Traffic Signal experience.
