This position is classified as Temporary Part-time, no benefits. Parking Attendants work on an as-needed basis. Scheduling is based on the City's event calendar.
Job Summary
Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies and procedures, provides customer service during event parking. Collects funds from customers as they enter the facility and directs traffic to available parking spaces. Sets up facility prior to event and breaks down at conclusion of event. In some instances, directs traffic out of facility and in the street after events. As an ambassador, assists customers with the pay stations during heavy traffic. Protects residential, monthly, and hotel spaces. Works a variable hour, flexible schedule as events take place during the day, at night, and on weekends.

Act as Lead Staff: Responsible for placement of other staff, distributing bags and funds, assisting with setting up the facility and taking it down, and securing all funds and bags in the safe after the event. Monitor the facility during the event and if close to filling the facility make preparations for closing it and determine if able to reopen. May lead contract parking staff in support of events. Provide a high level of customer service before, during and after event operations.

Collect Money for Parking Events: Secure funds and event bag prior to start of event. Verify funds and starting ticket, and complete appropriate paperwork. At assigned area, begin collecting funds from customers as they enter.

Direct Traffic: Report to assigned area with safety vest and wand in preparation to park the vehicles once they have paid to enter. Direct cars to open parking spaces in safe and efficient manner. Utilize good judgment while exiting traffic to prevent any accidents or injuries. Assist pedestrian traffic as necessary. Assist with directing traffic in the street to flush the traffic in the proper direction according to predetermined traffic plans from the Police Department.

Set-Up and Break-Down Parking Events: Report to assigned facility and assist with setting up the facility for event parking. This includes moving and placing multiple signs, barrels, cones, and put the gates in the proper position once the facility is set up. Assist with closing the event and putting the facility back into normal operations.

Serve as Parking Ambassador: Assist customers with paying the pay station or flat rating customers to empty the traffic if it begins to back up. Protect resident spaces, monthly and hotel spaces and close the facility as needed to protect those spaces. Report any issues to supervisor in charge.

Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent.
This is an entry level position for which training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior customer service experience.
Prior cash handling or cashier experience.
Experience in the parking industry.
Experience with computerized revenue control systems; cash, ticket, and permit handling and control.
Driver's License Requirements
Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of:
Basic City geography and locations of downtown parking garages in order to provide directions.
Customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Provide high level of customer service.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Calculate basic payment amounts, make change, and accurately account for cash and receipts.
Direct cars to open parking spaces in a safe and efficient manner.
Set up barrels, cones, barricades, a-frame signs, and various other equipment.
Read and understand manuals and policies.
Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Use directional wands, handheld credit card machines, radios, and emergency telephones.
Operate basic office equipment and complete electronic timecards.
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (Parking garages/facilities).
Protective Equipment Required: Police wands and safety vests/shirts.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:
Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Weekly exposure to extreme temperature and wetness and/or humidity. Monthly exposure to respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Frequent exposure to physical danger or abuse (angry customers/vehicles).
Physical Demands:
Continuously requires standing, handling, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires walking, carrying, reaching, and climbing. Occasionally requires lifting, sitting, kneeling, bending, and twisting. Medium strength demands include exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or up to 5 pounds constantly.
Mental Demands:
Frequently requires time pressures, irregular schedule/overtime, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations, frequent change of tasks, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
