The City of Greenville has an opportunity for a Planner I (Zoning Enforcement Section) in our Planning and Development Services Department. The purpose of Planner I is to perform planning activities and studies primarily related to zoning enforcement and signage permitting. The Chief Planner supervises this position.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Hiring Range: $48,630.40 - $62,004.80/annually depending on qualifications
Full Salary Range: $48,630.40 - $75,379.20/annually

- Acts as primary zoning enforcement officer for the City;
- Prepares zoning compliance and zoning certification letters;
- Receive and address zoning complaints
- Reviews and approves on-premise, off-premise, and temporary sign permits, including related zoning enforcement of permit dependent signs;
- Conduct inspections of legal and illegally constructed signs.
- Assists the general public, development community, professional consultants, boards, commissions, and staff concerning planning related matters, impending projects, processes, timelines, and requirements;
- Attends Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and City Council meetings, as required;
- Analyzes and makes recommendations on section budget; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and
- One year of experience in local government planning office conducting zoning and/or sign permitting and enforcement.
Knowledge of:
- the City's Zoning Ordinance and development programs.
- land use concepts, population density, and annexation problems.
- quantitative methods and research techniques.
- the municipal government framework.
- preparing charts and graphs.
- understanding ESRI ArcMap to review GIS maps.
- interpreting statistical data.
- organize and conduct complex planning and research studies and formulate relevant recommendations.
- prepare and maintain with technical accuracy comprehensive master city plans and maps, especially as it applies to land use planning.
- direct, supervise, and coordinate several major planning projects concurrently.
- prepare and present clear and concise oral and written reports of planning activities to internal and external agencies.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other City employees and officials, and other departments.
- operate assigned equipment, including computer equipment and various software packages.
- Work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public
- work safely without presenting a direct threat to self of others.

- A valid N.C. Driver's license and acceptable driving record.
