The School Resource Officer unit and Special Operations Bureau “Youth Community Outreach” of the Greenville Police Department emphasize education and rehabilitation over punishment when dealing with juvenile and young offender complaints. As a School Resource Officer, your law enforcement duties are to enhance the safety and security of the school by providing a safe learning environment for all including students, staff, parents, and the community.
Salary after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period: $55,057.60 - $60,569.60, depending on starting salary.
- Contributes positively to the execution of the mission of the unit and the Greenville Police Department;
- Assumes responsibility for the security and safety of assigned school;
- Serves as a liaison between assigned school and the Greenville Police Department;
- Patrols the school during school hours while acting as a visual deterrent, especially during class changes, lunch times or times and areas of large gatherings;
- Performs security checks throughout the day by checking interior and exterior doors, windows, and any other security measures necessary to ensure school safety;
- Completes incident reports, arrest reports, and juvenile petitions when necessary;
- Acts as a role model and seeks to establish a strong rapport with school administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and others;
- Maintains flexibility in scheduling, as an SRO may need to adjust to various events, including but not limited to, sporting events, meetings, after-school activities, threats, or other incidents;
- Attends and participates in community meetings and efforts;
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Must be a Certified North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer in good standing with the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission OR must have successfully completed an approved North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program.
- Must have at least two years of full-time sworn law enforcement experience.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development (GED) test.
- Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application.
- Must be of good moral character with no disqualifying criminal conviction(s).
- Must undergo an extensive background investigation including, but not limited to, polygraph exam, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen.
- Must successfully complete a physical agility test and oral interviews.
- Must be available to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule.
- Must meet any other minimum employment requirements established by the City of Greenville.
Note: Applicants selected for this position will be assigned as a School Resource Officer after successfully completing a field training program with the patrol division, which lasts up to three months. Applicants must be willing to work special events and assist with other patrol functions as needed. Applicants may be reassigned to a patrol shift if needed to support the agency's staffing requirements or as part of changes within the unit.
