The City of Greer is currently accepting applications for an Animal Control Officer in our Police Department.
Responsibilities: Enforces ordinances and statutes related to the control of dogs and cats by patrolling assigned areas and picking up dogs and cats which are in violation of state, county, and/or city codes. Captures and impounds diseased, injured, stray, or trapped dogs and cats. Responds to and investigates complaints from the public regarding diseased, injured, stray, and abused dogs and cats. Investigates cases of cruelty to dogs and cats, abandonment, and barking dogs, etc. Ensures that confinement of such dogs and cats is according to City policies and procedures. Investigates, quarantines, and follows up on animal bites. Provides proper care for animals as necessary including feeding, acquiring medical aid, and related duties. Documents animal control incidents, bite investigations, violations, citations, etc. Appears in court to prosecute violations of the animal control ordinance. Prepares and maintains files (including records and reports) regarding impounded dogs and cats, animal bites, quarantines, investigations, citations, vehicle logs, and daily statistics. Operates and maintains a city animal control vehicle according to policy. Operates various types of machinery and equipment including police radio, cell phone, dog loops, animal control traps, computer, printer, tranquilizer gun, firearms, digital camera, etc. Maintains all necessary continuing education to retain the Animal Control Officer certification and Class 3 certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Performs related work as required.
Job Requirements: • High school diploma or GED equivalent. Six (6) months experience in animal control, law enforcement, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Must be able to successfully complete Class 3 Law Enforcement Certification training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy within twelve months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm; additional hours as needed
Salary: Minimum salary $46,233 a year, dependent on experience.
