In this role, you will coordinate and perform fire prevention functions and activities, including fire code compliance, fire and life safety inspections, fire investigations, and public education and information.
What you will get to do:
- Performs commercial, residential, and other building fire code compliance inspections; ensures safety and compliance of fire escapes and exits, fire hazards, and utility of fire protection equipment; reviews inspection findings with owners and occupants; determines remediation and performs follow-up to ensure corrections have been made.
- Responds to complaints about faulty fire alarms, fireworks, and other hazardous conditions and materials; responds on fire calls such as fire alarm activation, illegal burning, smoke investigations, and others; responds to complaints and concerns about fire code violations; coordinates or performs fire investigation activities to determine cause of the fire; investigates, documents, and assists in the prosecution of arson cases; prepares records and reports of activities, incidents, inspections, and others.
- Collaborates with other organizations to develop fire safety programs and activities, including fire drills, evacuations, and employee training; conducts fire prevention education programs at schools, daycare centers, healthcare facilities, neighborhood groups, and others.
- Analyzes and reviews federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conducts research and analysis on fire prevention best practices and trends and formulates recommendations.
- Perform fire inspections of businesses to verify they meet the fire safety standards in the 2022 Oregon Fire code. While on site, fire safety education will be provided. Reviews results of inspections with appropriate parties. Determines remediation and follows up to ensure corrections have been made. Conduct data entry, plan and coordinate fire safety inspections of businesses, and attend training.

- Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations
- Analyze problems quickly, identify alternative solutions, assess consequences of proposed actions, and determine course of action
- Develop educational programs and information pertaining to assigned activities
- Operate firefighting equipment and tools
- Work efficiently under pressure
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external contacts
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; present information, proposals, and recommendations clearly and persuasively
- Physically perform the essential job functions
- Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Up to 1 year of fire service, inspection and/or investigation experience
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Investigator certificate or International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) certificate is required within 12 months of hire.
- Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Fire & Life Safety Recognition Oregon Fire Inspector 1 certificate is required within 6 months of hire.
- Valid driver's license
- Good driving record (based on our driving matrix described below)
- A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
- Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
- Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one-year period.
- Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
