The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department (GCPRD) has an extended history of providing recreation-based summer programming and camps.  Programs offer a safe, affordable place for children to stay mentally, socially, and physically active in the summer.  Counselors can make a difference in children’s lives. 

Appointed by the Mayor in consultation with the Administrative Assistant, the Lead Summer Camp Counselor, under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Supervisor is responsible for the development, organization, and execution of well-balanced, diversified summer camp programming.

The ideal candidate possesses the following attributes: 

  • Is at least 18 years old and has a high school diploma. 
  • Must commit to working all of the summer programming (5 days of unpaid vacation is allowed).
  • Has proven ability in oral and written communications.
  • Has the ability to follow direction, provide necessary services and enforce stated rules and regulations.
  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, civic leaders and the public in general.
  • Has a basic understanding of child development and group management. 
  • One year of experience in camps or programming is preferred. 

Details:
Salary - $17.85 per hour.
Schedule - Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 6:00 pm, up to 40 hours per week with some evenings or weekends required. 
Duration - June, July, and August 2025.
Counselors are permitted to take up to 5 unpaid vacation days.The Lead Camp Counselor, under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, shall:

  • Demonstrate regular attendance.
  • Possess good communication skills, patience, and a positive attitude. 
  • Use positive behavior management including clear and consistent expectations for behavior, positive feedback, and redirection.
  • Supervise the daily activities of counselors, programs, confirming locations, and similar duties.
  • Plan and organize weekly summer camps including staffing, supplies, and materials, field trip confirmations, and other items as assigned.
  • Lead a team to create a positive environment where children can learn about themselves, interact with peers, and experience success.
  • Responsible for overseeing all daily operations, reports, and records required.
  • Actively interact with staff and children individually while maintaining control of the entire group. 
  • Follow policies and procedures of the city, department, and specific program.
  • Supervise, attends, and participates in summer field trips, including the Big Splash swimming pool.
  • Attend all staff meetings and In-Service trainings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Obey and promptly execute all orders of the Administrative Assistant. 

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); ascends and/or descends stairs; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; routinely required to stand, walk, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl on even and uneven surfaces; regularly required to lift, carry, push, or pull objects 30 lbs or less.
 
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work.

Knowledge of:  Appropriate early education and childcare practices; office practices and procedures; English grammar and spelling; records management; *City/department goals and objectives; *City/department policies and procedures; *workplace safety practices and procedures; *personnel rules and regulations; public relations.

Skill in: typing; MS Word or other word processing software; computer operation; use of modem office equipment; use of telephone/mobile phone.

Ability to:  carry out simple instructions; carry out instructions in basic written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in basic written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context; read, copy, and record figures accurately; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; prepare accurate documentation; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; instruct others; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; arrange items in numerical or alphabetical order; sort items into categories according to established methods; *maintain records according to established procedures; work alone on most tasks; answer routine telephone inquiries; develop and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate manual dexterity; travel to and gain access to work site.
