Appointed by the Mayor in consultation with the Administrative Assistant, the Service Technician - Fleet Mechanic, under the immediate supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Crew Leader, is responsible for providing automotive-related services to units of City government. The incumbent is responsible for the accuracy of their work products involving various facets of maintaining the City's fleet such as performing minor maintenance and repair work, transporting vehicles to contracted vendors for service, and maintaining/organizing shop inventory. 

The Fleet Mechanic position shall be chosen solely on the basis of the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in the profession and as shown by the adequacy of their technical training and successful experience.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of secondary education (high school or GED) and must be 18 years of age.

  • Must be able to qualify for and remain insurable under the City's vehicle insurance policy.

  • Possesses a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or is able to obtain in the first six (6) months of employment. The City of Grove City will provide CDL training as necessary.

  • Can pass the City's Physical Fitness Exam, which will be administered on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 9:00 am

  • Is available for evening, weekend, or on-call hours as needed.

  • Has proven ability in oral and written communications.

  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, civic leaders and the public in general.

  • Sufficient knowledge of the automotive mechanic professional field to carry out a full range of varied responsibilities and discharge the accountability required of the Fleet Mechanic.

The ideal candidate: 

  • Has 5 or more years' experience in automotive repair.
  • Holds ASE Certifications such as Electrical, Brakes, or Engine Repair. 
  • Has knowledge and experience working with Diesel engines.

This role is part of the AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) Trade Union and participates in the OPERS pension system.

The Service Technician - Fleet Mechanic shall have the following duties under their direct supervisor:

  • Obey and promptly execute all orders of the Administrative Assistant.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks on City vehicles. 
  • Complete minor vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Deliver fleet cars to vendors for contracted services. 
  • Pick up, inventory, and organize fleet supplies. 
  • Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist with the efficient delivery of City services such as operating and maintaining City-owned equipment and vehicles, such as backhoe, skid steer, snow removal equipment, tractors, mowers, police division fleet, etc.
  • Inspects equipment and tools prior to operation to ensure safety. 
  • Maintains City tools and equipment as required.
  • Maintains contact with City personnel/departments, the general public, and various government agencies/officials in order to obtain or deliver information related to the essential position functions.
  • Maintains required licensures and certifications.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines (e.g., belts, reels, blades, pulleys, etc.); exposed to possible injury from explosions and/or falling from high places; has exposure to fire; has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; regularly required to lift, carry, push, or pull 50 lbs. or less. Employee may be subject to irregular work hours and must be available 24/7 unless alternate arrangements have been approved by Supervisor and exposed to vehicular traffic when working in the public right-of-way.
 
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium to heavy work.

Knowledge of *City/department goals and objectives; *City/department policies and procedures; safety practices and procedures; first aid practices; road construction, maintenance and repair; custodial methods and techniques; building construction, maintenance and repair; general construction, maintenance and repair; mechanical maintenance; vehicle maintenance and repair; heavy and medium duty equipment maintenance and repair; proper lifting techniques; grounds maintenance and repair; local geographical area.
 
Skill in building painting; motor vehicle operation; use or operation of mowers, trimmers, tractors, street-sweepers, chipper, crack sealer, jackhammer, medium duty equipment such as backhoes; loader, skid steer, snow plow, roller, use of bench and/or hand tools; use of mechanics' tools and equipment.
 
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving few variables within familiar context; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; complete routine forms; prepare accurate documentation; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; *maintain records according to established procedures; develop and maintain effective working relationships; use maintenance equipment; perform heavy manual labor; travel to and gain access to work site.  (*indicates developed after employment).
 
Must possess a valid Class B Ohio Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with applicable endorsements, and maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
