TITLE : TECHNICIAN I
DEPARTMENT : PARKS AND RECREATION
CLASSIFICATION : FULL TIME, NON-EXEMPT
GRADE : 4 (Starting pay $15.50/hour)
The City of Gulf Breeze Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to the provision of superior parks and facilities; diverse leisure opportunities; and attractive thoroughfares that serve to enhance the quality of life of our residents, our neighbors and our guests. Our facilities include 44,000 square foot community center; a comprehensive athletic complex and tennis facility; disc golf; a skate park; multiple community parks, fishing piers, boardwalks, picnic facilities, public beaches, boat launches, and several natures preserves and trails, encompassing over 500 acres of land.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Technician I position is an entry-level role within the Parks Division, performing maintenance and upkeep of parks, grounds, and facilities that offers advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who demonstrate successful performance. This position involves outdoor work in various weather conditions and requires teamwork, adaptability, and the use of company-provided personal protective equipment (PPE). Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Parks Manager or his designee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Assists and performs routine maintenance of parks facilities and grounds under direct supervision.
· Assisting crew members in daily maintenance of parks, fields and facilities.
· Ability to dig pits, trenches, and or indentations manually or mechanically.
· Ability to restore and landscape disturbed areas of the job sites.
· Ability to maintain and repair grounds equipment.
· Planting and care of trees, shrubs, sod, etc.
· Move equipment, such as bleachers, to accommodate events.
· Work directly with the public and contractors to resolve issues.
· Communicate well with supervisors, foreman, and co-workers.
· Repairing and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
· Additional duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in parks maintenance and repair activities.
· Knowledge of the types of facilities, materials and supplies required to carry out wide variety of park activities.
· Ability to plan for and accommodate multiple and simultaneous facility utilization reservations.
· Knowledge of approved, acceptable methods and tools used in parks maintenance activities.
· Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with the public and vendors.
· Skilled in the operation of heavy equipment such as back hoes, digging and trenching equipment, lifts, etc.
· Knowledge of safe handling principles and practices regarding pesticides and fertilizers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· The Parks Manager assigns work in terms of goals and objectives to be attained. Work is reviewed upon completion for the nature and propriety of results.
· This position involves tasks related to the boat ramp operations.
· Work in performed with intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking. Must be able to occasionally lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. The work is primarily performed outside in changing weather conditions.
· This position may also require the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely with a valid Florida driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Experience in heavy manual labor and the use of hand and light power tools preferred.
- Valid Class “E” Florida driver’s license.
- Must pass post offer drug screening, post offer physical and Fit for Duty Employment Testing.
