Position Function:
Under the direction of the Parks Supervisor or Superintendent, performs duties necessary to support the Parks Division to ensure the proper maintenance of City parks, grounds, green spaces, athletic complexes and fields, ponds, swells, berms, and common areas for City-owned property and/or facilities providing for a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.
This is a skilled supervisory and working position, requiring knowledge of the Parks Department's equipment, policies and procedures, and maintenance areas. This position requires the ability to schedule, supervise, and coordinate work crews of up to 5-6 persons. This position requires record-keeping involving maintenance activities. This position requires the experience, knowledge, and ability to also perform all jobs duties of the Grounds Maintenance Worker position, (see attached listing for specific requirements), in addition to the following:
Essential Duties:
- Employee Supervision: Complete and submit weekly observations on all individuals under your supervision to the Parks Supervisor. Ensure all individuals under your supervision are maintaining and operating City equipment according to City policies and procedures. Detail daily/weekly assignments for all individuals under your supervision. Monitor and maintain a safe, efficient, and effective working relationship among yourself and all employees under your supervision. Monitor adherence to all City policies and procedures by all individuals under your supervision.
- Performs duties necessary to support the Parks Division to ensure the proper maintenance of City parks, grounds, green spaces, athletic complexes and fields, ponds, swells, berms, and common areas for City-owned property and/or facilities providing for a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. Responsible for the care and replacement of plants and trees, including but not limited to raking, pruning, mulching, clearing, planting, minor irrigation installation and repair, mowing, weeding, edging, and painting. Responsible for safely using and proper care and maintenance of all tools and equipment necessary to complete projects, assignments, and/or tasks.
- Performs duties to ensure the upkeep of ball fields, recreation centers, and athletic complexes through debris and trash removal, painting, and "striping." Responsible for the care, maintenance, and repair of artificial turf through vacuuming and disinfecting, and removal and replacement of cushioning pad/padding.
- Responsible for preparing for events through constructing and/or deconstructing fencing, barricades, chairs, and stages, as well as "set-up" and "tear-down" tasks. Prioritize, coordinate, and ensure the efficiency of all daily maintenance schedules. Schedule and maintain a consistent and uniform routine that encompasses all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance requirements. Ensure daily checklists, vehicle mileage logs, and daily work logs are kept current and up to date.
- Record data from mowing routines, and athletic fields for maintenance logs. Work with Irrigation Lead/Technician to resolve any irrigation issues in your areas. Work with licensed Applicators in applying any necessary chemicals and fertilizer.
- Other essential duties: Assist supervisor with project planning/scheduling. Assist shop mechanics in training employees on equipment operation and maintenance. Assist in planning projects, and budget needs.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Environment:
Duties are performed primarily within an outdoor environment or setting. Possible exposure to electrical and chemical hazards; vibration; loud noise; inclement weather; dust, allergens, and mold.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Required knowledge and experience are normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or GED, and one (1) year work related supervisory experience is required.
- Hazmat Spill Response Certification.
- Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
- Must be able to communicate and present oneself professionally.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical equations for the application of fertilizers and use of chemical cleaners.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employee officials, and the general public.
- Ability to take and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to read and understand instructions and product directions.
- Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to work during weekends and nighttime events and hours of operation.
- Skilled in operating landscaping equipment and handheld and/or power tools.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a Valid Florida Class E driver's license.
- Must pass applicable pre-employment testing and background and credit checks.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
