Description
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Lifeguard- Seasonal is temporary (seasonal) position and responsible for providing supervision and instruction of various age groups in swimming and diving activities and for the safety of patrons in the swimming area. Supervision is received from a Pool Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills, and abilities. Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate.
- Teaches beginning and advanced classes in lifesaving, swimming, and diving.
- Determine eligibility for and conducts competitive swimming.
- Enforces pool rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the public.
- Performs rescue and administers artificial respiration, CPR, and First Aid when needed.
- Checks the proper maintenance of the equipment and sanitation of pools and bathhouse facilities.
- Collects entrance fees from patrons.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- Receives general supervision from a Pool Manager.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities, except for patrons.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Principals and methods used in teaching swimming.
- Lifesaving methods and procedures, including CPR, First Aid and standard resuscitation measures.
- Rules and regulations governing conduct of public at pools.
- Swimming pool sanitary and chlorination systems.
- The application of lifesaving techniques.
- Swimming.
Ability to:
- Communicate orally in the English and Spanish language.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Administer first aid and CPR.
- Perform rescue actions.
- Enforce rules and regulations firmly but tactfully.
- Work cooperatively with other City staff and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Education & Experience:
- Minimum two (2) months of experience as a Lifeguard.
- Minimum 16 years of age.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly required to lift arms above shoulder level; reach with hands and arms; and lift and/or move objects of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
