The Harrisonburg Fire Department (HFD) is seeking trained career Firefighters desiring a challenging career in public service to join HFD!
This advertisement is being used to fill an immediate vacancy and to generate a potential hiring list for anticipated future vacancies (within a six-month period from the advertisement closing date) for both full-time and part-time statuses.
At this time, HFD is not accepting applications for entry-level Firefighter Recruit positions due to having an active hiring list for that classification. HFD operates in a team environment with a mission to enhance the quality of life for the community by protecting their health, safety, and welfare through fire suppression, emergency medical services, prevention, and public education. The preferred hiring range for this position is $18.82 - $20.23 per hour, equivalent to $51,867 - $55,753 annually for full-time positions.
Minimum Qualifications
All Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a Firefighter position:
- At least 18 years of age by date of hire,
- High School Diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and
- Valid Driver's License.
For Career Firefighters currently employed in the City of Staunton, City of Waynesboro, Augusta County, Rockingham County, and Rockbridge County who have previously successfully completed the Regional Firefighter Test*:
- Virginia Firefighter II, EMT, and Hazardous Materials Operations, or a VA-recognized equivalency, are required.

- If hired, the individual must successfully complete the Regional Firefighter Testing's physical agility test at the next scheduled test date, but no later than 12 months from hire date.
- The Regional Firefighter Testing referenced in this job advertisement is the event hosted by the following agencies: City of Harrisonburg, City of Staunton, City of Waynesboro, Augusta County, Rockingham County, and Rockbridge County.
Important Notes:
- All uniformed personnel in the Department must become a released Engine Driver/Operator and be proficiently advanced to a Firefighter II position in accordance with the corresponding position description within one year of assignment to the Suppression Division, or as deemed appropriate by the department.

- Criminal background check;
- Medical evaluation;
- Drug screening; and
- Personal History Statement.
