If so, apply to become a Transportation Planner with the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department's Planning Division, where you'll work to facilitate safe and efficient travel within and through the City!
The Transportation Planner role is a full-time exempt position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $30.90 - $33.99 per hour (equivalent to $64,272 - $70,699 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. While this position cannot be completed fully remotely, a future availability for a hybrid telecommuting work arrangement may be considered.
As the Transportation Planner, you'll:
- Participate in developing/updating long-range plans and other special initiative plans, such as the Transportation Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, the Downtown Streetscape Plan, the ADA Transition Plan, and others;
- Attend Transportation Safety & Advisory Commission and Bicycle & Pedestrian Subcommittee meetings and provide staff support by sending out meeting notices and other communications, preparing the agenda, and taking meeting minutes;
- Communicate with the public by creating and updating content for project websites, sending out news updates via an email marketing platform, conducting online public surveys, and participating in other communication strategies;
- Use ESRI Geographic Information Systems to create maps for a variety of projects;
- Provide support for public meetings, including organizing logistics, developing materials, compiling public comments, and assisting in evolving public participation methods;
- Assist the Traffic Engineer with studies, including data collection and analysis;
- Provide support for grant applications and the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program;
- Assist in the review of development plans, such as site plans, rezonings, special use permits, and more;
- Participate in the development of alternatives and recommendations to solve transportation-related problems;
- Conduct a variety of research on transportation best practices;
- Operate a City vehicle in the performance of job duties;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with significant course work in urban and regional planning, engineering, landscape architecture, geography, geographic information systems, public administration, or related field, and some (3-5 years) related professional experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement. Experience working with committees and using geographic information systems to create maps is preferred but not required for consideration.
