Vacancies are in the Sports and Recreation Department. Under immediate supervision performs public safety and recreational work in enforcing regulations and preventing injuries or loss of life at a municipal swimming pool or beach. Prevents accidents through the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the conduct of persons at a swimming pool or bathing beach. Keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water and on deck or beach front. Warns swimmers against dangerous practices and reminds swimmers of pool or beach front policies. Instructs non-swimmers and weak swimmers to stay out of deep water. Assists bathers from water when in distress. Resuscitates rescued bathers, administers first aid and calls emergency services/public safety personnel in serious accident cases. Assists in teaching swimming and lifesaving and coaching swimming teams. Assists at water contests and exhibitions. Performs related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. The examination may also include a written test, an oral test, physical swimming examination, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The test is designed to measure: Knowledge of: Rescue methods and first-aid as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding areas.Ability to: Teach swimming and lifesaving methods;Enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially;Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public;Prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies, and to take the necessary action.Skill in: Swimming, and in rescue, resuscitation and first aid administration.

If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening examination, and a background check. If appointed, you will be required to serve three (3) to twelve (12) months of probation.
