Nature of Work
This is general duty auxiliary powers in enforcing laws and ordinances. An employee of this class is responsible for the protection of life and property; and for maintaining law and order. Work involves an element of personal danger, and may be performed either in plain clothes or in uniform. Specific assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures; however, employees must be able to act without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports, inspections, and observation of results obtained.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Patrols an assigned area in a patrol car; checks doors and windows of business establishments; investigates unusual crowds of people; enforces vehicle parking and operating laws; watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing person and property.
Aids in directing traffic at an intersection; enforces traffic laws; and gives information concerning the location of streets, routes, and buildings. Aids in case of civil disorder as directed by the chief of police.
Prepares reports; maintains prescribed logs and records.
When it is impractical for members of the regular police department to perform their normal and regular police duties, the chief of police may assign auxiliary police officers to perform those normal and regular police duties, except as prohibited by law.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledes, Abilities, and Skills
- Some knowledge of the geography of the community and the location of important buildings.
- Some knowledge of modern principles and practices of police work.
- Some knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances.
- Some knowledge of first aid methods.
- Ability to observe situations objectively and to report and record them clearly and completely.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
- Ability to develop skill in the use and care of fire arms and in the operation of motor vehicles.
- Good physical strength and agility.
Experience and Training
Some experience in work involving public contact; graduation from a standard high school; completion of required basic police training course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Duties will require the ability to regularly sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear
on the phone and in person.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include prolonged visual concentration, close vision,
distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Vision corrected to
20/40 (binocular) and ability to distinguish color in both eyes.
This position will have extensive contact with others.
At times, workloads can be extensive with limited time for response/and or action. Position requires
prolonged periods of concentration and the ability to cope with numerous interruptions and changing
priorities
While assisting sworn personnel, the position may work under precarious circumstances and near high
speed vehicles or equipment. May require the ability to perform duties that may require running,
climbing, stooping, kneeling, stepping over uneven ground, and physically confronting and restraining
combative individuals.
At times will be exposed to weather elements including extreme heat, cold, high winds, etc. May be
exposed to fumes, chemicals, and bodily fluids such as blood.
Ability to lift, carry or drag up to fifty pounds.
Equipment Used
General office equipment including computers, laptops, scanners, copier, and cellular phones.
Police equipment including police radios, motor vehicles, including squad cars and trucks; first aid
equipment; chemical sprays; cameras; video equipment; drug-testing kits; handguns; shotguns; rifles.
TASERs; handcuffs; etc.
