DEFINITION:
Incumbent functions as a leader of a crew and as such carries out a variety of tasks associated with the maintenance, repair or replacement of City streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and storm drains. Works under the direction of the Manager of Streets.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB TASKS: (Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions)
- Maintains all city-owned streets, curbs, sidewalks, and storm drains
- Assists the Manager of Streets in formulating job tasks for the crew
- Assigns crew’s daily work
- Perform asphalt maintenance and repair of City streets
- Supervises a crew to meet safety, quality, and productivity goals set by the Manager of
- Streets and the Director of Public Works
- Maintains City-owned trees in City parks and right of ways
- Operates trucks and equipment of various sizes (2.5 ton and 1 ton dump trucks, pickup trucks, snow plows, sewer vac truck, etc) in a safe and efficient manner
- Routinely operates heavier equipment such as backhoes, loaders, and paving equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Safely and efficiently operates a variety of hand and power tools
- Provides assistance to the Building and Parks Crew Leader as needed
- Disposes of trash from City owned refuse containers
- Completes annual evaluations of subordinates
- Maintains inventory of City tools, supplies, and materials; orders new tools, supplies, and materials as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
OTHER RELATED FACTORS:
- Incumbent may work outside and, as a result, works in all kinds of climatic and weather conditions
- Work exposes the employee to dust, dirt, smells, fumes and airborne particles and to moving mechanical machinery and the risk of electrical shock
- Work requires the use of proper protective equipment
- Employee is required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, seven days per week, e.g., severe storms, vandalism, mechanical failures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of equipment, methods and techniques used in maintenance and repair activities of streets, sidewalks, curbs, and storm drainage systems
- Skill in operating various equipment, vehicles, hand tools and small power tools
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsement is required
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing and ability to perform as a member of a team
- Ability to lead people and direct work
- Must be able to frequently stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Must be capable of lifting loads up to 50 pounds and, with assistance, as much as 100 pounds
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- 5 years’ experience with equipment, methods, and techniques used in street, sidewalks, curbs and storm drainage systems installation and repair activities
