What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reserve Police Officer position at City of Hayward?
The City of Hayward invites applications for Reserve Officer.
Final filing date: Continuous, Reserve officers work on a voluntary basis. Time
requirements are a minimum of 16 hours pre month. There are currently 25 openings for
reserve officers.
The Department: The Hayward Police Department is comprised of a staff of 197 full-time
and 23 Reserve sworn personnel and 124 professional staff. The department supports a
Community Policing philosophy and offers excellent promotional and special assignment
opportunities. Reserve officers enjoy a minimum of 9 training days per year.
The Position: Duties include a wide variety of law enforcement assignments, including but
not limited to patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio
communication. These require operating a patrol vehicle, arresting and citing violators of
laws, writing reports, testifying in court and providing information to the public. Reserve
officers that are interested in performing communication dispatch duties are invited to
apply. Safety equipment is provided at no cost. A three-year commitment to the Reserve
Bureau is desirable.
Experience and Certification: No experience or POST certification for entry level, Level III
Reserve Officer. Level II Reserve Officer must have have a valid Level II POST certification,
or be enrolled in Level II module. A Level I Reserve Officer must have a Basic POST
Academy certificate, or be enrolled in the Level I module.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Licenses: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Free of any felony convictions.
• A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).
• Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.
• Must pass a background investigation.
• Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.
• Bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
• Scheduled minimum 16 hours as mandated by POST.SELECTION PROCEDURE:
1. Candidates must submit a completed City of Hayward job application.
2. Pre-qualifying background questionnaire via Survey Monkey to determine the eligibility to advance in the process.
3. POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) Exam, that candidates must receive a score of 46 or higher to advance in the process.
4. Physical Agility Test where all components of the event must be passed in order to continue to the next phase of the process.
5. Computer administered writing skills examination (different from the POST written examination) designed to evaluate your writing skills and abilities.
6. Oral Panel Interview where candidates will be interviewed by a qualifications appraisal panel to determine ranking on the Reserve Officer Eligibility List.
7. Those candidates ranking highest on the Reserve Officer Eligibility List, will be granted a selection interview where they will be interviewed by the Personnel and Training Administrator of the Hayward Police Department.
8. Those candidates deemed most highly qualified from the selection interview
may be invited to interview with the Chief of Police.
9. Final selection and job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive police background investigation, including personal history, prior job performance and activities that may negatively affect job performance, as well a medical examination and psychological examination.
