Job Purpose:
Supervision of the City of Helena’s trail crew under the Assistant Open Lands Manager. Incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that trail crew work assignments are completed to a standard that meets or exceeds department/division standards. The incumbent must manage the crew's timesheets, document completed tasks, maintain crew morale, and inform the assistant manager of any tardiness or disciplinary issues.
The crew leader is responsible for completing the tasks of the City of Helena’s trail crew which may include but will not be limited to such activities as; recreation trail construction and maintenance; recreation trailhead facility maintenance and construction, forest thinning and hazard tree removal; fence construction and maintenance; combating insects, pests, and diseases harmful to trees; constructing trail erosion and water control structures; restoring vegetation through scarification and seed distribution; equipment repair and maintenance; supply procurement; and biological data collection.

Duty 1: Trail Construction/Maintenance
This position will work independently and/or be responsible for ensuring that the City of Helena's trail crew is engaged in the construction and maintenance of recreational trails. The incumbent must have the knowledge of and/or the ability to learn sustainable trail construction and maintenance skills and adequately teach these skills to new trail crew members. The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands associated with transporting equipment to remote locations and performing manual labor for extended periods.

Duty 2: Recreation Maintenance and Construction
This position will work independently and/or be responsible for ensuring that the City of Helena's trail crew is engaged in constructing, maintaining, and repairing trailhead facilities, perimeter fences, and buildings. The incumbent will also perform and manage the crew's maintenance of open space, including trimming and mowing wildland grass areas. They will be responsible for the safe operation of both hand and power-driven tools commonly used in construction applications, as well as overseeing the safety of their crew members with these tools. The incumbent will be required to perform layout measurements and master fabrication techniques required to repair and replicate high-quality, sturdy, and durable products. They will work closely with city staff, using and maintaining heavy machinery with the potential for operation.

The incumbent must have the ability to learn to and teach the operation of equipment used in forest fuel reduction and vegetative restoration while maintaining crew safety. Additionally, the position will likely engage in the operation and maintenance of a track driven mechanical chipping machine in challenging topography.

- Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job assignments and occupations.
- Completes reports related to occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses which are immediately delivered to their supervisor. Follow supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as requested by the supervisor.
- Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee.
- Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience and Training):
- This position requires previous experience in the operation of hand tools, power tools, saws, four-wheel drive vehicles, and UTV/ATV’s.
- This position requires the incumbent to be 18 years or older on the start date of the position.
