What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEMP URBAN FORESTRY TECH position at City of Helena, MT?
DEFINITION
Under supervision, perform manual labor necessary to develop, maintain, protect and improve the urban forest of Helena. Tasks may include but not limited to such activities as pruning, hazard tree removal, tree planting, erecting and enforcing street and sidewalk closures, operating a gas powered wood chipper, operating a gas powered stump grinder, combating insects and diseases harmful to trees, installing and maintaining mulch rings around trees, equipment repair and maintenance, supply procurement and biological data collection.

SAFETY RELATED DUTIES:
Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job assignments and occupations.
Report occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses immediately to their supervisor. Follow supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as requested by the supervisor.
Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee.
Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Safe driving principles and practices.
Turf, landscape and building maintenance.
Skill to:
Safely operate lawnmowers, and string trimmers.
Operate department equipment and perform maintenance tasks using a variety of hand and power tools.
Ability to:
Perform or quickly learn the variety of skills needed to perform assigned duties.
Establish and maintain positive relationships with City employees, supervisors and the public.
Physical Demands
Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb, kneel, twist, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, ability to travel to different sites and locations.
Work Environment
Works outside frequently in all weather conditions.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience/Training:
Previous experience in turf and landscape maintenance; ability to work with people; some organizational skills, and the ability to follow instructions responsibly. Due to Federal Labor laws, the equipment used by this position requires that individuals in this positon are at least 18 years of age.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid MT drivers license with acceptable driving record.
