  • Summary Description

    Under immediate or general supervision performs various law enforcement duties in order to protect life and property and provide service to the public.

    THE POSITION :

    Successful candidates are appointed in a non-safety capacity while attending a 24-week P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy under the sponsorship of the City of Hemet Police Department. Upon successful completion of the academy and subject to departmental approval, the Trainee is promoted to Police Officer and paid the Police Officer entry-level salary. Once appointed to a sworn Police Officer position, the employee must successfully complete the Police Department's Field Training Program and serve a one-year probationary period.

    SALARY :

    Police Officer Trainee - $5,418month

  • Police Officer Trainees receive 75% of the current Step A rate for Police Officers. This rate shall be applicable until a Police Officer Trainee is moved to the classification of Police Officer, at which time, the Police Officer shall then receive 100% of Step A rate for Police Officers until advanced to the next step.
  • Sworn Police Officer - $7,224 - $9,680 / month

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Education :

  • High school graduation or GED certificate.
  • Certification / License and / or Special Requirements :

  • Must have attained age 21 years upon the time of appointment as a sworn officer.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
  • Background :

  • Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude, able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Uncorrected vision of 20 / 100 or better in both eyes and must be corrected to 20 / 20 in one eye, 20 / 30 in the other eye. Normal color vision.

  • Excellent physical condition must be physically capable of performing all tasks required of a Hemet Police Officer as determined by a physical agility test and medical evaluation.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions associated with law enforcement, i.e. run after fleeing suspects, accurately use and qualify with issued equipment including firearms and batons, drive a police vehicle for extended periods of time, have the strength and ability to defend against attacking suspects, take physical control of violent suspects, move, drag or carry persons from danger.

    TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT TIMELINE :

  • IMPORTANT : After the application review, those selected to move forward to participate in the written exam and physical agility test will receive a notification to confirm attendance. The written exam and physical agility test will be held on the same day. Exams will be graded on site and those candidates passing the written exam will continue to physical agility testing later that day.

    The following is a summary of the provided benefits to full-time employees in the Hemet Police Officers unit. For further information, please refer to the Hemet Police Officers Association MOU.

    Retirement : The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).

  • Classic Members : 3% at 55 Formula; 1959 survivor benefit; final compensation based on single highest year; employee contributes 12% (no Social Security deduction).
  • PEPRA (New) Members : 2.7% at 57 Formula; 1959 survivor benefit; final compensation based on a three-year average; employee contributes 50% of total normal cost, currently 14.75% (no Social Security deduction).
  • Medical Coverage :

  • The City contributes 100% of premium for employee only coverage on the City's Kaiser plans.
  • Plan Year 2024 / 2025

    Dental & Vision Coverage :

  • The City pays 100% of the premium for dental & vision coverage for employees and their dependents.
  • Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance :

  • The City pays 100% of the premium for a term-life insurance policy of $50,000.
  • The City pays 100% of the premium for long-term disability insurance.
  • Educational Reimbursement :

  • The City will provide up to $2,500 per calendar year, subject to terms set forth in the Hemet Police Officers Association MOU.
  • Leave Accruals :

  • Employees earn up to the following amounts of leave :
  • 96 vacation hours per year within the first three years of service

  • 8 hours per month Sick Leave
  • 13 paid holidays per year
  • Bilingual Pay :

  • The City will provide $255.00 per month for eligible assignments based on the City's needs for bilingual skill and successful completion of a test.
  • Special Compensation :

  • K-9 Officer Pay : assigned officers will receive seven (7) hours of overtime pay per pay period.
  • Patrol / SRO : assigned officers will receive an additional 2% base salary increase.
  • Field Training Officers : assigned officers will receive an additional 10% base salary increase.
  • Mandatory Stand-by / On-call : assigned officers will receive $250 per pay period.
  • Uniform Allowance :

  • The City will provide a uniform allowance in the amount of $1,345 per year.
  • Educational Incentive Pay :

  • The City will provide 3% above base pay for officers presently holding a POST Intermediate Certificate or a Bachelor's degree.
  • The City will provide an additional 5% above base pay for officers presently holding a POST Advanced Certification or a Master's degree.
  • Maximum 8% combined incentive.
