This position is responsible for preventative maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and guidance of a Mechanic II.
May require an irregular work schedule in the event of snow or other emergency situations. Must be willing to cover on-call duty as scheduled. Must possess a Class C driver's license from NC. Class B CDL driver's license preferred. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Major Duties
Performs engine, exhaust, steering, electrical, and brake repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment; removes and replaces transmissions, engines, and differentials.
Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, and heating and air conditioning repair; checks fluid levels.
Performs preventive maintenance by checking antifreeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, tires and safety equipment on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment.
Performs corrective maintenance procedures on heavy equipment, including transmission, hydraulic, electrical, brake, and various degrees of engine repair.
Welds and fabricates parts.
Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical malfunctions for a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary.
Must be willing to cover monthly on-call duty as scheduled.
Maintains the shop and assigned tools.
Assists in cleaning all shop areas.
Performs other duties as assigned.
After-hours work is required during emergencies, inclement weather and other times as necessary.
Knowledge and Qualifications
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for two years.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Class "B" CDL driver's license preferred.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work is typically performed outdoors and in a garage. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks and goggles.
