- Assigns, trains, supervises, and evaluates personnel in the performance of division activities.
- Monitors daily collection routes.
- Possess working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Delivers roll-outs and recycle bins to new customers; replaces bins and roll-outs.
- Solicits commercial dumpster customers.
- Develops and updates dumpster routes.
- Completes time cards for division personnel.
- Completes required reports.
- Oversees preventative maintenance of division equipment.
- Responds to customer complaints and questions.
- Investigates accidents.
- Establishes new recycling accounts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in solid waste management operations.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws relevant to department operations.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
• Knowledge of city policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance of a variety of light and heavy-weight equipment.

- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
- Possess working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third-party vendor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in an office and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts, dirt, dust, grease, noise, garbage, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Solid Waste Manager assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include relevant state and federal laws and environmental regulations, city ordinances, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied administrative, supervisory, and technical duties.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide supervisory, administrative, and technical support to the division. Successful performance ensures the effective and efficient operation of the division and enhances the image of city government.
