This position performs construction duties and utility locating in support of the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems.
- Physically locates water and sewer mains, services lines, valves and meters requiring a high level of detail.
- Uses electronic and/or paper utility maps, engineering plans, and other drawings to assist in determining the actual location of City-owned underground utilities.
- Visits actual sites and uses maps and plans, electronic pipe locating equipment, shovels, probing rods, and measuring instruments such as metal detectors, pipe horns, and/or Metro Tech split box to field verify the location of underground utilities, and marks their locations using color coated flags and/or paint.
- Marks locations of city-owned underground utilities to facilitate the contractor’s excavation work within public right-of-ways and easements.
- Edits, reviews, and maintains water and sewer maps; makes notations, changes, diagrams, and sketches to update and maintain database and maps.
- Performs field measurements and prepares notes and sketches in both electronic and hand written format of utilities which are shown incorrectly on maps and drawings; conveys this information to technical staff who make the appropriate changes.
- Operates leak detection instruments.
- Uses basic construction practices in daily performance of duties.
- Locates underground utilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Successful completion of a post-offer functional pre-work screen and a drug screen. This process is designed to determine if applicants are able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the job without physical harm to themselves, or others.
