The City of High Point is currently seeking a Recreation Attendant that assists Recreation Center Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor in the overall management and operation of the facility and recreation programs. Recreation Attendants are considered essential staff and can supervise a facility in the absence of a full-time staff member. Work schedule may include nights, weekends and holidays.

Work is performed under regular supervision of Recreation Center Supervisor.

Essential Tasks

  • Maintains daily attendance records for all registered program participants;
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates weekly activities to include field trips, sports, games, crafts, swimming, drama and special events;
  • Greets parents and children daily upon arrival and ensures authorized party gets children at departure time;
  • Prepares camp area for daily operation, placing tables, chairs, equipment and program materials; Transports campers to daily activity sites;
  • Enforces center and camp polices and safety rules and regulations;
  • Inspects equipment daily, makes repairs or arranges for repairs;
  • Cleans work and program areas as needed during the day and upon conclusion of activity;
  • Prepares lists of materials and equipment needed for camp activity and makes requests for same;
  • Makes preparation for participants' lunches and snacks;
  • Maintains First Aid supplies, orders additional supplies as needed;
  • Assists regular staff as needed;
  • Handling general office duties.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies.
  • Oversee and / or direct daily program and staff activities.
  • Provide outstanding customer service when assisting the public through various communication methods.
  • Responsible for program registrations, facility rentals
  • Follow proper collection and cash handling procedures.
  • Opens and / or closes and secures facility when scheduled.

Qualifications

  • Formal Education :
  • Requires a high school diploma, or equivalent.

  • On-the-job training approximately 4 weeks. Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and report making. Some education or previous experience working with youth, adults and seniors.
  • Must be 18 years of years or older.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with other employees and the public. Must be able to apply basic knowledge of phases of child development. Ability to drive 15-passenger van.

    Reasoning

    Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to practical situations and requests made by employees or members of the general public; to understand and communicate with youth, adults and seniors; comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Good judgment is essential.

    Math

    Using Arithmetic : Ability to use arithmetic to add and figure number of program participants and attendants and make reports.

    Language

    Read : Ability to read forms, policies, correspondence, booklets, manuals, reports, records, messages and other documents related to the job.

    Write : Ability to write information as needed to complete records and reports, information received through incoming calls, and make notes.

    Speak : Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions by telephone or in person

    Physical Requirements

    Light to Medium Work : Exerting negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and papers, to make reports, answer telephone and file. Additional strength required to lift tables, chairs and equipment. Physical demand requirements usually require walking, standing, stooping, bending, stretching and sitting on the ground or floor, however, worker may sit in a chair at times. There is significant use of arms, hands, feet and legs.

    Reaching, Handling, and Fingering : (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). Necessary in reaching for documents, answering telephone, filing and doing activities with the children. (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingers not involved). Necessary to hold and / or carry equipment, telephone, program materials and children. (Fingering -Picking, pinching, punching or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling). Necessary for writing, picking up documents, dialing telephone, etc.

    Talking and / or Hearing : (Talking - Expressing or exchanging information by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees, program participants and the general public in person and by telephone.

    Seeing : The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are :

    1. Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see the children across an open space and give instructions to them regarding the program activity. Both eyes 20 / 25 - R 20 / 30 - L 20 / 30 corrected

    2. Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see program materials, telephone, documents and other paper work near at hand. Both eyes 20 / 22 corrected

    3. Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time. Depth Perception - 4

    4. Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span to cover surrounding area in order to observe children who are located in the area while attending to one or more children near by.

    5. Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing away to check another project or see what a child is doing. Must be able to adjust the lens of eye to glance quickly to ensure all is safe and program participants are all right.

    Environmental Conditions

    The worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions : Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes while inside and generally hot weather when outside. Work includes a variety of activities requiring the employee to be flexible in his / her surroundings.

    Worker may be subject to poison oak, poison ivy, insects and unlevel terrains. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

    Calculator, stapler, telephone, telephone directory, note pads, pens, pencils, calendar, records, Personnel Resolution, various crafts, games, tables, chairs, video equipment, activity planning books, screw drivers and other assorted hand tools.
