Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician I

The Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician performs difficult skilled mechanical work and repair of the fire equipment and apparatus. The Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician assists other divisions and does related work as required. Work is performed independently and reviewed by the Administrative Battalion Chief/Chief Mechanic.
  • Diagnoses mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repairs, adjustments, and services for a wide variety of medium and heavy-duty fire and pumping apparatus, aerial truck hydraulic systems, and marine firefighting equipment.
  • Repairs, overhauls, and maintains specialized fire and rescue equipment.
  • Overhauls and repairs diesel engines and fabricates assemblies and accessories, such as hydraulics, compressed air, vacuum and electronic controls, systems, and components.
  • Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as troubleshooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts.
  • Performs preventative maintenance as required.
  • Repairs and provides routine maintenance on small tools, firefighting appliances, and lawn equipment.
  • Responds to emergency scenes for rehabilitation, equipment malfunctions and or operation of Air/Light Truck as needed or requested.
  • Maintains and assist in upkeep of record management system (RMS) for parts inventory, equipment repairs, compliance/testing regulations, and costs for goods and services.
  • Solicits pricing, procures supplies and equipment for maintenance of apparatus.
  • Drive and operate department dump truck and department apparatus as needed.
  • Operate department forklift and other hi-lift equipment as needed for loading, unloading, repairing equipment or placement of supplies and materials.
  • Repairing of firefighting equipment and service equipment.
  • Ability to climb and descend ladders of various heights, 
  • Rotates after hour “on call duties” with other personnel to maintain 24-hour service on emergency equipment.
  • Inspects and certifies vehicles for compliance to state and federal safety standards and NC Division of Motor Vehicles requirements.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies.
  • Formal Education
    1. Graduation with High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    2. On the job training approximately 3 to 6 months.
    3. Experience as an Emergency Vehicle Technician preferred.
    4. Complete and maintain Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications for Fire Apparatus EVT F-1&2, ASE T-4&5 within two years of employment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships through written or oral communications.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations and OSHA requirements.
  • Certifications
    1. Forklift/tow motor operator license or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid North Carolina Class A CDL Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.

Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/25 – R 20/30 – L 20/30 corrected.  
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.  Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Depth perception - 4
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
    • Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to bring an object into sharp focus.
    • Color vision – ability to identify and distinguish colors.

      1. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
      2. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and

    • The Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician is subject to working inside or outdoors. Position is subjected to various weather conditions, (sleet, snow, ice, rain, wind, extremely hot or cold) whenever emergencies occur or performing regular duties.
  • Hazards
    • The Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician may be exposed to trash, debris, numerous chemicals smoke, combustible and flammable materials, various gases, body fluids or other hazards. The work performed is subject to the final standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
