The City of High Point is currently seeking a MRF Equipment Operator I that performs responsible semi-skilled work operating a front-end loader, skid steer and forklift in the movement and separation of recyclable material at the city’s Material Recovery Facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
- Operates equipment loading recyclables onto conveyors, loading into baler hopper, dumping recycling baskets and loading scrap metal, white goods, and glass into roll-offs.
- Operates skid steer in loading recyclables onto conveyors, moving cardboard, wood and metals into appropriate areas and moving recycling baskets in and out daily; roll-off containers and compactor.
- Operates rotary broom to sweep and scrub tipping floor.
- Operates forklift transporting and loading bales of recyclables onto semi-trailers.
- Checks recycling and residual baskets under sorting lines and replaces when full.
- Services equipment by greasing and blow out filters, does pre trip inspections daily.
- Operates light equipment and assists on the sorting line when needed.
- Able to communicate and properly use handheld radio.
- Operates balers, strappers.
- Fuel equipment as needed.
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
- Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Experience with heavy equipment is required.
- Must be able to lift to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have good driving and safety records.
- Valid NC Driver’s License.
- Preferred Skills
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience as a Mechanic.
- NC CDL
- Physical Requirements Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants. Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
- Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle, or addressing an audience.
- Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
- Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
- Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.

- Environmental Conditions Physical Surroundings
- The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather without heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. The position is best suited for someone who doesn’t mind getting hot, cold, wet, dirty, and sweaty.
- Hazards
- Employee will be exposed to trash and garbage as well as various other items as discarded. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
- Machinery, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work.
