Perform responsible para-professional work and simple profession work for public-facing library divisions and at the seasonal Farmers Market operated by the library. This is a ‘floating’ position, with tasks assigned as needed. Lending Division:
- Answer questions in person and over the phone at public service desk.
- Register new library borrowers.
- Assist customers with photocopier and self-check station.
- Check out and renew materials.
- Collect fees using credit card machine and money transaction spreadsheet
- Check out holds at drive through window.
- Sort and shelve materials using Dewey Decimal or alphabetical order.
- Assist customers in person and over the phone at public service desk.
- Assist with adult and teen programs.
- Working as a team on special division projects.
- Assist customers in person and over the phone at public service desk.
- Assist customers in the public computing center when the division is short-staffed or during especially busy periods.
- Assist Research Services adult outreach staff, accompanying them to neighborhood visits, outreach events, and programming events.
- When needed, accompany children’s outreach staff to daycares, community locations, parks and recreation centers, and schools.
- Check in materials returned from outreach locations.
- Assist staff with creating crafts for in-house and outreach programs.
- Assist Junior Friends’ summer reading volunteer program.
- Staff Farmers Market table on a rotating schedule during the Farmers Market season – late April – the end of October.
- Assist with processing EBT (SNAP) transactions, accepting and recording vendor booth payments, accept payment for Friends of the Library market book sales, answer library and market-related questions, and help with setting up and breaking down tents, tables, children’s games, signage, and other market items.
- Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree
- Customer service or retail experience.
- Experience in the use of computers, common computer software, and word processing.
- A valid North Carolina driver’s license
- The ability to relate to and communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
- Good listening skills.
- The ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- The ability work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
- Previous library experience
- Bilingual, especially Spanish or Urdu

- The Library Associate is subject to working inside or outdoors. The Farmers Market operates regardless of weather or temperatures, and many community events in which the library participates are held outdoors.
