Performs skilled tire and vehicle services on a variety of automobiles, trucks, construction, and off-road equipment; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Shop Foreman.
 
  • Repairs and replaces automotive, truck, and off-road equipment tires and wheels;
  • Responds to road service calls;
  • Cleans and repairs tire shop work area and equipment;
  • Maintains tire inventory and records;
  • Checks lights, wipers, signals, tire wear and fluid levels;
  • Assists technicians with repair and maintenance duties;
  • Picks up parts and supplies as needed;
  • Cleans general shop area and tools,
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Formal Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • On-the-job training approximately three (3) to six (6) months.  Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and/or business math.  Graduation from high school plus experience and understanding in the operation of an automotive, truck, or industrial tire facility.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • CDL/B.  Must be able to meet CDL/B requirements within 180 days of hire date.
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle or addressing an audience.
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.
Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
  • Light Work mostly, Heavy work at times
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and
  • A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks and handle practical situations, comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in a timely fashion and exercise good judgment.

  • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of work orders.Language Ability
  • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
  • The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Employee will normally be working inside of buildings with protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.  Employee is subject to all weather conditions including very hot and extremely cold, rain, wind and ice.
Hazards
  • Employee will be exposed to refuse trucks, petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a fleet maintenance facility.  Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment
  • Tire machines, tire tools, tire balancer, Nitrogen machine, computers, printers and related software, telephone, power tools, hand tools, service vehicles, hydraulic lifts, and other equipment found in a vehicle and equipment tire service shop.
