YOUR PURPOSE
Take on a vital role in the Transit Division where you’ll be responsible for clerical work maintaining and providing schedule information to the public; You’ll do related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Transit Supervisor.  

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Provides information and assistance to passengers boarding buses at the transit terminal;
  • Sells tickets; receives, records and accounts for funds and makes change;
  • Distributes schedules and route information, and provides directions to the public;
  • Cleans and maintains terminal facilities;
  • Assists transit operators with schedules and directions;
  • Monitors buses in and out of the transit terminal;
  • Provides security for passengers in the transit terminal areas;
  • Acts as receptionist and performs clerical tasks;
  • Answers in-coming telephone calls, provides information, receives, records, and routes complaints to appropriate personnel;
  • Operates two-way radio to communicate messages to Transit Operators, Supervisors, and other transit personnel;
  • Maintains "lost and found" service;
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Formal Education
      1. High School Diploma OR General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
    • Must speak, read, and write the English Language
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License
    • Must have general knowledge of public information and public relations techniques, principles, and practices;
    • Must have the ability to speak clearly, understand, and follow written and oral directions;
    • Must have the ability to deal effectively with the public; 
    • Must have the ability to keep simple records; 
    • Must have the ability to operate standard office equipment; 
    • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and the business community;
    • Must be able to work flexible schedules to include fill-in, split shift, nights, weekends, and holidays. Vacation and holiday leave are subject to adequate coverage on all shifts;
    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Spanish and/or French Language skills
    • General knowledge of transit routes, schedules and services;
  • Physical Requirements

    Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with office personnel, supervisor, drivers, and the general public.  Worker often uses the telephone and two-way radio.

    Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

    • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Worker must be able to see in-coming buses, other vehicles, persons coming into the terminal, etc. Both eyes 20/22 -R 20/25 -L 20/25 corrected.
    • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see computer screen, schedules, tickets, transfers, operating records, report forms, two-way radio, etc.   Both eyes 20/30 corrected
    • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. 
    • Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time.   Depth Perception – 5
    • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see wide span of area to cover surrounding and/or approaching traffic.  When working in the office, must be able to see entire work area to observe when someone walks in.
    • Accommodation – This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check terminal.  Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly back and forth to perform close at hand work while observing activity in office.
  • Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:

    • Light Work
      1. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
      2. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and
      3. A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position
    • Type of Physical Demands
      1. Physical demand requirements usually include sitting, walking, standing, bending, lifting, reaching, pushing and pulling.   There is significant use of arms, hands, legs and feet.
      2. Reaching - Extending the hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction is required
      3. Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s) is required.
      4. Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm is required.
  • Mental Activity/Requirements

    Reasoning

    • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks, practical situations and requests made by operators, supervisor or the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in a courteous and expedient manner.  Good judgment is necessary.

    Mathematics Ability

    • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Essential when making change, counting moneys, and making reports.

    Language Ability

    • Read:  Ability to read operating data including trips, time, mileage and ridership numbers, routes, schedules, fares, transfers, records, policy guidelines, programs, etc. 
    • Write:  Necessary to complete required reports. 
    • Speak:   Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees, supervisor and the general public in person, over PA system, telephone, and two-way radio.
  • Environmental Conditions

    Physical Surroundings

    • The worker is subject to working inside and outdoors. Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures.  Generally working inside and protected from weather conditions, but required to keep exterior areas of the facility clean and occasionally required to run errands and must be subjected to various weather conditions.

    Hazards

    • Normally not exposed to hazards.  Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

    Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment

    • Schedules, logs, routes and fares information, maintenance and operating records, special service information, marketing programs, various forms, computer, copier, ordinances, Personnel Resolution, pens, pencils and other work aids associated with the job.
