The City of High Point is currently seeking a Transportation Technician that performs responsible skilled and technical work in the repair, maintenance and installation of signal system control devices; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Signal System Supervisor.
- • Assists with installation, relocation and maintenance of traffic control devices including controllers, network ethernet switches, and related signal system devices.
• Assists with the daily operations, technical duties and functions and general services of the Signal System Division of the Transportation Department.
• Assists with the installation, relocation and maintenance of the signal system communication network.
• Assists with the analysis of current traffic signal operations and investigates methods for improvement.
• Operates an aerial bucket truck for CCTV camera maintenance and related equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance on CCTV cameras and cabinets.
• Assists with fiber optic cabling system including pulling, splicing, installing terminating connectors and interfacing equipment.
• Assists the Transportation Technician with field surveys, site distance complaints and other data, Traffic Signal and other traffic control devices. Assists with lane closure permits and driveway permits as needed.
• Assists with collecting field data using automated traffic counters and performing traffic studies necessary for determining roadway improvement needs.
• Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
? High school diploma
? Some knowledge and experience in Electrical utility work and knowledge of the trade equipment and materials is preferable.
? On-the-job training is approximately six (6) months to (1) year.
• NC driver’s license required with CDL endorsement with one year of hire.
• Obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Field Tech within (1) year of hire.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
Preferred Qualifications
• Two-Year Degree in Electronic Technology or related field.
• Experience working with Traffic Signals and / or Traffic Signal System.

• Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
• Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle, or addressing an audience.
• Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
• Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
• Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
• Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.

Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings:
• The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather as well as in rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke, wind and lightning storms. This may require the individual to wear the same clothing and continue work for a period to exceed the normal work schedule in case of emergency. Worker is subject to other conditions such as pollen, creosote and other substances that may cause allergic reaction

• Service trucks, bucket trucks, line tensioners and pulling rigs, telephone, cutters, small hand tools, drill press, grinder, voltmeters, computer, gasoline, two-way radios, pens, pencils, manuals, codes, regulations, ordinances, policies, electrical tools, small hand tools, cleaning products, paint, sign brackets, safety devices (cones), cables, conduits, ammeters, ladders and voltage testers.
