Your Purpose:
Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and make a real impact in your community? As a Water & Sewer Mains Technician, you’ll play a vital role in keeping the City of High Point’s water and sewer systems running smoothly. From installing and repairing pipes, meters, and valves to ensuring the distribution and collection systems are in top condition, no two days will be the same. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team, maintaining essential infrastructure and supporting the city's facilities—plus, you’ll have the chance to take on a variety of tasks, including cleaning duties, to keep everything in top shape. What You’ll Do:
- Operate sewer cleaning equipment on motorized vehicles, including flusher, vacuum, and rodding equipment
- Assist in the installation, repair, and replacement of water mains, sewer lines, taps, fire hydrants, valves, and meters
- Respond to water and sewer line issues, cleans lines and manholes
- Raise and lowers manholes and valve boxes
- Tap high-pressure lines and make connections
- Inspect sewer lines using a TV inspection system
- Support Water/Sewer Technician III or Crew Chief by inspecting and distributing tools, equipment, materials, and supplies
- Assist in traffic control by setting up warning and directional signs
- Operate pick-up trucks, service trucks, or tandem trucks to haul materials and equipment to/from job sites
- Able to work up to 16 hours in extreme weather conditions
- On-call for regular rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
- Use hand tools for utility line maintenance tasks
- Communicate via two-way radio with staff and other departments
- Adhere to OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
- Must have or obtain a CDL driver’s license with a tanker endorsement
- Assist with training new W/S Technician I hires
- Maintain records and completes reports as required
- Participate in connecting water and sewer pipes to mains and service connections
- Conduct flow monitoring and leak detection tests
- Serve as Back-up ORC
- Assist in maintaining good public relations by addressing citizen concerns
- Participate in research and development projects

Required Minimum Qualifications
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on call.
- A Grade II NC Wastewater Operator Certification or B Distribution Operator.
- Experience operating equipment (mini excavator / sewer combination truck).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with Water/Sewer Mains.
Physical Requirements
- Manual Dexterity: Regular use of hands and arms for reaching, grasping, and handling objects, as well as fine motor skills for tasks requiring precision.
- Hearing and Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively in noisy environments, both to give directives and respond to questions.
- Visual Abilities:
- Far acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more for safety and task management (20/22 corrected).
- Near acuity: Ability to focus on close tasks such as paperwork and tools (20/25 corrected).
- Depth perception: Ability to judge distance and space for safe coordination of tasks (5 depth perception score).
- Field of vision: Wide visual span to monitor surroundings for safety.
- Accommodation: Ability to adjust focus for near and far tasks, ensuring safety and task completion.
- Physical Strength:
- Exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds consistently.
- Physical tasks include sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, lifting, bending, and using arms, hands, legs, and feet.
- Repetitive Tasks: Frequent use of reaching, handling, and fingering.

Environmental Conditions
- Physical Surroundings: Exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, high winds, and fog.
- Hazards: Exposure to dirt, debris, plants, insects, confined spaces, and potential contact with bloodborne pathogens, in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Equipment: Use of motor vehicles, hand tools, electric tools, plumbing equipment, computers, measuring devices, and communication tools.
- Special Requirements: Must have a strong understanding of traffic and safety regulations, as well as the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer systems.
