Description of Primary Purpose
Primary Purpose:
Assist the City Forester with forestry-related programs including administration of parkway tree planting & maintenance programs, code enforcement, tree health monitoring programs (Dutch Elm Disease and Emerald Ash Borer), and tree inventory and database management.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general supervision of the City Forester or Assistant City Forester.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists Forestry Section staff with the enforcement of City Codes relating to trees and shrubs. Inspects and responds to requests from the public.
- Systematically canvasses the City for dead, diseased or hazardous trees. Performs minor pruning tasks with hand tools for visual clearance.
- Conducts follow up inspections on contracted tree planting, pruning, and removals, and grounds maintenance programs. Follows safe practices.
- Establish new landscape installations and nursery propagation by monitoring watering needs or other factors.
- Collects information needed to update and keep the computerized street tree inventory current.
- Performs mailings, files documents and performs other office work as required. Follows safe practices.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Education and Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is required. Coursework in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, urban forestry, or a related field preferred; ISA Certified Arborist preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of one year working experience in forestry-related field, including a combination of office and field work. A Bachelor's degree may be substituted in lieu of this experience.
Certification or License:
A valid driver's license.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Proficiencies:
Working skill in exercising good judgment, maintaining confidentiality and making responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; prioritizing, organizing and performing work independently; operating a computer with the software and programs necessary to perform the work of the department; planning and maintaining complex office and record keeping sequences and systems; communicating effectively orally and in writing; composing and preparing correspondence.
