Description of Primary Purpose

The planning intern performs a variety of entry-level professional planning tasks involving land use regulation and program administration. Recent college grads or current students are encouraged to apply!
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Assists professional planning staff with research and data collection and with preparation of reports and presentations. Researches, compiles and analyzes data from multiple sources to provide information to address a number of current and long-range planning issues.
- Reviews routine land use applications to ensure compliance with requirements such as use, bulk, placement, and parking ratios. Prepares narrative reports regarding various land use considerations including minor land use considerations. Assists other planners in the review and processing of subdivision and zoning applications and / or in programmatic areas related to housing, historic preservation, long-term planning, capital improvement or other special projects.
- Provides technical assistance and information to the public in the administration of specific planning programs or ordinances. Provides direct customer service as Planner of the Day on a rotating basis to answer general planning and zoning questions. Updates status of programs and projects on City's website and application logs.
- Performs routine office tasks, including data entry, electronic file management, copying and answering telephone. Records plats in recorder of deeds office and tracks subdivision plat preparation and other documents in a computer database. Creates files and databases to organize planning records.
- Conducts site visits to properties and collects information about field conditions. Prepares public notices or property owner verifications. Performs site visits to gather information regarding land use considerations.
- Assists staff representatives during public participation events or public meetings.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Education and Experience

Education :
Enrollment in a master's degree program in planning, geography, architecture, landscape architecture, public policy or related field.
Experience :
Previous paid employment for 12 months (may be non-consecutive) is preferred.
Certification or license :
A valid driver's license is required.
