Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Director who will possess strong leadership skills and a passion for enhancing the lives of those we serve around the community of Highland Park. This role requires a strategic thinker to ensure that our department meet the highest standards of quality and effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- At the direction of the Mayor, helps with all divisional activities of the Public Works Department by assisting with development of short and long term goals and objectives.
- Regularly meets with the Mayor and other departments needed or directed to review divisional activities, coordinates work effort, discusses and resolves problems and assures adherence to department goals, objectives and policies. Along with the Director, keeps the Mayor informed of department’s activities through written and oral reports.
- Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions.
- Attends meetings of the City Council and various Commissions and Committees of the Council to present pertinent data and information to aid them in their decision making process.
- At the direction of the Mayor and in coordination with City Engineering, assist with the preparation of the departmental budget and of capital improvements of public works character.
- Assist HR with interviews, trainings, counsels, evaluation, and discipline of department employees. Making hiring recommendations to the Human Resource Department.
- Meets with department heads, coordinating activities to reduce or eliminate unnecessary duplication of efforts.
- Speaks on behalf of the City at public or social meetings.
Qualifications
- An Associate's Degree or the equivalent in civil engineering, construction or a public works related field. (Required)
- A High School Diploma or GED required.
- 5 or more years of progressively more responsible experience in public works and water systems, including supervisory and administrative duties.
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License required, CDL preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present information clearly and persuasively.
