Under the general direction of the Parks Manager, the Athletic Field Manager is responsible for overseeing the management, operations, and maintenance of the department’s athletic facilities. This position assists in recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising seasonal, part-time and full-time staff. This position has the responsibilities of recommending and overseeing the upkeep, upgrade, construction and/or renovation of athletic facilities, while coordinating all maintenance activities, ensuring high-quality playing surfaces, and overseeing management and operations of athletic facilities. The role requires a proactive approach to maintaining both natural and synthetic turf fields, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and providing a premier experience for athletes and visitors. This position works with the Parks Manager to collaboratively develop and implement policies and procedures relating to the day-to-day operations of the Hilliard Athletic Complex. This position is responsible for budgeting and financial management, safety and security, and executing a high-quality customer service as it relates to the Hilliard Athletic Complex.

Essential Functions of Work:

Coordinates the scheduling, training, evaluation, and management of full-time Maintenance Technicians, part-time and seasonal staff, contract laborers, and volunteers. Provides leadership by demonstrating the department’s vision, mission, and values according to Hilliard’s Promise (Heart for Service, Strength in Teamwork, and Drive for Excellence).

Directs, supervises, evaluates, and schedules assigned staff. Develops and participates in annual staff evaluations and staff’s professional development.

Determine the manner in which maintenance tasks are to be completed. Schedules and assigns work activities to team.

Responsible for maintaining natural and synthetic athletic fields by measuring, laying out, and clearly marking the boundaries and playing surfaces of athletic fields according to regulations and accepted standards.

Oversees and participates in mowing, watering, and fertilizing turf grass according to schedule.

Operates a variety of motorized vehicles and specialized mechanical equipment such as, but not limited to diamond groomer, robotic field painter, gator, mowers, tractor with bat-wing attachment, based on the functions necessary to perform specific job duties.

Utilize various hand tools such as, but not limited to shovel, push mower, weed eater, handsaw, chainsaw, based on the functions necessary to perform and/or train staff for specific job duties.

Lays down and maintains playing surfaces, such as filling holes and dragging clay on ball diamonds, adding fill to artificial turf, removing water from the field, rotating rectangular fields seasonally, or grading a field during the off-season.

Identifies various turf diseases and performs and directs pesticide and chemical application where applicable.

Maintains and schedules irrigation by maintaining equipment and winterizing and de-winterizing.

Serves as the on-site contact for athletic field issues during league and tournament play.

Responsible for the supervision and related duties of athletic buildings and facilities, including scheduling and maintenance. Must be able to work independently and ensure that facilities are operating in a safe manner that meets or exceeds current industry standards and Health Department regulations.

Maintains records and prepares reports, including an integrated pest management plan. Must be able to ensure accountability for projects assigned.

Recommend maintenance staffing needs for department sports fields.

Prepares and monitors annual athletic complex budget, providing ongoing financial activity and works in alignment with supervisor to make budgetary recommendations as it relates to the maintenance and operations of all athletic fields, staffing needs, athletic facilities, and operations.

Responsible for financial management related to the acquisition of supplies and equipment according to operating budget and prepares purchase requisitions.

Performs public relations functions between the city, community, and various civic agencies and groups.

Participates in the planning, organization and implementation of athletic facilities goals and objectives; assists in the formulation of division policies and procedures.

Negotiates service contracts for labor, maintenance, and facility repairs.

Ensures that emergency situations are managed appropriately and oversees staff training. Responsible for revisions of safety protocol, policies, and procedures. Ensures that staff records related to training and professional development are maintained, such as but not limited to CPR, AED, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.

Manages athletic facilities and ensures the safety and cleanliness of all equipment; inspects park grounds and facilities and submits recommendations on the upkeep, upgrade, construction and/or renovation of parks.

Prepares annual and end-of-season reports and correspondence as directed. Reports and maintains records, such as but not limited to maintenance reports, records related to products ordered, etc.

Responds to inquiries and complaints verbally and in writing and has the ability to handle complaints in a professional manner. Maintaining high standards for customer service, which includes complaint resolution and conflict resolution.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in construction, maintenance and repair activities as related to assigned areas in sports field maintenance.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage maintenance schedule and provide leadership for personnel.

Ability to make recommendations regarding personnel, equipment, maintenance, and supply functions.

Ability to supervise, direct, instruct, and solicit cooperation from others in performing their daily work assignments and duties.

Ability to maintain accurate records.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.

Ability to answer inquiries, resolve complaints, and communicate with the public and staff effectively, tactfully, courteously, and professionally.

Possess a working knowledge of general office software, including Microsoft Office, 311, and Rec Trac.

Typical Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or Associate's Degree in turf grass science or an equivalent combination of education in Parks and Recreation Administration or other related field from an accredited four (4) year college or university preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the recreation and parks field.

Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Possession of valid Commercial Applicators License (Turf Pest category) and (Industrial Vegetation category) issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Pay: $61,984.00 - $85,009.60 per year
