JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position will receive general supervision from the Sanitation Supervisor and his/her designee within a well-defined framework of established policies and standard operating procedures.This position will perform heavy manual labor and other related duties in connection with the collection and disposal of refuse, performs litter control and spotting activities at the transfer stations and the landfill or specific roadways, interacts with customers, inspects residential waste-streams and assists in waste characterizations, and learns to operate refuse collection and disposal equipment. Insures route is completed as instructed and follows all safety policies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Drives residential refuse truck in a safe and efficient manner while visiting numerous residential locations on a daily basis, to collect solid waste either by manually collecting the garbage or using an automated garbage-disposal truck.
  • Transporting and disposing of garbage in a safe, effective, and environmentally friendly manner at a City approved dump site.
  • Operating an automated garbage-disposal truck to lift garbage dumpsters and service cans when necessary.
  • Completes daily reports concerning vehicle maintenance and safety.
  • Maintains vehicle in ready working condition, including fueling, proper lubrication, and cleaning of working parts.
  • Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Delivers and stacks garbage bags to City facilities.
  • Knowledge of City and roads.
  • Knowledge of sanitation ordinance and regulations.
  • Maintains a regular and reliable level of attendance and punctuality.
  • Assists in the performance and monitoring activities in support of the City's Public Works Department and performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and other specialized applications related to area of assignment.
  • Two-way radio communication devices and other related equipment.
  • Basic arithmetic (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, rations, and fractions).
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Proper methods of performing various types of manual labor.
  • Principles of effective customer service.
  • Basic principles and practices of waste disposal and recycling.

ABILITY TO:

  • Understand and follow department policies and procedures.
  • Learn to operate vehicles and heavy equipment, and power and hand tools used in the collection and disposal of refuse.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Effectively organize and prioritize work assignments.
  • Keep accurate and orderly records.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Complete and submit department forms when required.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Learn to identify different types of waste in order to audit residential containers.
  • Apply customer service skills, including the identification of customer needs and follow up to ensure customer commitments have been met.
  • Adapt to new technologies, work processes, and communication and use this technology for record keeping, training and communication.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Carrying and/or lifting - Must be able to lift up to 75lbs.
  • Climbing - Climbs up and down on refuse trucks; must be capable of climbing up and down ladders.
  • Crawling - Under vehicles and equipment.
  • Standing - On uneven terrain, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Stooping - Inspect, clean vehicle and pick up refuse bags.
  • Holding - Hold tools with both hands, must be able to safely operate equipment required to perform the job.
  • Picking Up - Picks up paper and other debris on road ways to transfer facility. Picks up large items at curb sides such as sofas and appliances with assistance.
  • Tools - Use hand tools, hand shovel dirt, refuse, gravel.
  • Hearing - Must be able to hear radio transmissions.
  • Sight - Must be capable of seeing equipment and gauges.
  • Working Outdoors - Must be capable of working outdoors in extreme types of weather such as rain, cold and heat.
  • Noise - Ability to work in extreme and constant noise.
  • Odors - Able to withstand odors and dust.
  • Safety - Use good judgement to work safely and use safety equipment assigned for duties. Usage of proper lifting techniques when handling heavy objects.
  • Knowledge - Use of online mapping sites, good sense of direction.
  • Dependability - Team player, ability to endure tough working conditions, punctual.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, TRAINING:

  • Possession of a valid Georgia State Driver's License and/or a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate a garbage-disposal truck.
  • Possession of a safe driving record and clean report via a Motor Vehicle Report.
  • High School diploma preferred.
  • Depending on job assignments, some job tasks may require additional training or certification.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • All employees must pass a pre-employment drug screen and City of Hiram required DOT physical exam.
  • All employees are subject to random drug/alcohol testing throughout their employment (per DOT regulations).
  • All employees must maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • All employees must have willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job as assigned and requested.

  • This position is a full-time/non-exempt position with hourly rate of $16.00 per hour.
