Protects life and property by performing firefighting rescue, emergency care, hazardous materials and fire prevention duties.  Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

 
  1. Regular attendance is required to perform the duties of this position.
  2. Acts as Captain, in the absence of the Captain, as assigned.  
  3. Utilizes safe driving habits and is held strictly accountable for readiness of fire apparatus and equipment.  
  4. Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner under emergency and non-emergency responses; Retains current information of city geography, physical conditions, street names, location, and other matters that might affect response.
  5. Performs firefighting and rescue activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  6. Performs emergency aid activities including administering emergency care and providing other assistance as required.
  7. Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  8. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  9. Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  10. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  11. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment.
  12. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; Cleans and washes walls and floor; Cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; Washes, hangs and dries hose; Washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
  13. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
  14. Performs community service including but not limited to safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
  15. Initiates and completes written documents related to emergency treatment and work incidents.
  16. Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.

  11. (If required of the position)  Demonstrate self-initiative in performing routine tasks as in accordance with standard operating procedures and standard operating guidelines.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and chain of command.

This position is subject to the City of Hobbs’ Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following:  pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Associates in Fire Science or two years of college preferred.
  3. Two years’ experience as a full-time paid Firefighter of the Hobbs Fire Department; or 5 years’ experience with a paid, career department, with at least two years at a Driver/Engineer level or equivalent.
  4. Must have successfully completed recognized Hobbs Fire Department Driver Development Program or complete next available class upon hiring for position.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Working knowledge of driver safety.
  2. Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression, rescue, and other emergency equipment; Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques; Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke; Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  3. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.
  4. Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.

License and Certifications

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid state Class E driver’s license or equivalent.
  2. Must possess, at a minimum, a current NM AEMT or National Registry AEMT
  3. Must possess IFSAC certified Emergency Vehicle Driving (EVD) course and Pump Operations and Hydraulics course.
  4. Must possess IFSAC certified Hazardous Materials Technician program or complete next available class upon hiring for position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Prefer 21 years old at the time of employment.
  2. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years.  Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
  3. Must be able to read and write the English language.
  4. Must be able to meet Department physical standards.
  5. Residency requirement:  See personnel rules Sec 2.56.1030 City of Hobbs Fire Department Administrative Policy residency requirement.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Emergency medical aid unit, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders, first aid equipment, rescue equipment, and other standard firefighting equipment, radio, pager, phone, personal computer including word processing and data base software.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of a Fire Captain.  Works under the general direction of the Battalion Chief.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May direct the actions of personnel in the execution of firefighting and rescue operations.  May assist in the coordination, instruction, or supervision of new recruits.


 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and use hand to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls.  The employee is frequently required to reach with hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is also frequently required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 120 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.   The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
