Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Assists in the performance of skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of the municipal water distribution system. Assists with occasionally performing maintenance and/or repair on stormwater, reuse distribution, and collection systems. Performs other job duties as assigned. This is an essential emergency operations position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Locate and repair underground utilities including water and reuse system components.
2. Repair water system leaks, makes repairs to main breaks, meter boxes, meters, defective lines, broken fire hydrants, and backflow preventers; performs connections and disconnections during the repairing tasks.
3. Install new mains, valves, fire hydrants, backflow preventers, meter boxes, service lines, taps, and other water system components.
4. Perform and keeps records of valve exercising, fire hydrant flushing, and other general maintenance tasks and work orders,
5. Dig and make repairs to water leaks and reuse system components.
6. Ensure proper traffic devices are placed and safety precautions are adhered to.
7. Operate light and heavy equipment in performing tasks.
8. Respond to on-call assignments and in emergencies.
9. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to operate light equipment, machinery tools and/or materials used in performing the essential functions.
- Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to calculate and measure to determine material needed.
- Ability to comprehend and apply principles of basic mathematical concepts related to this position.
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, blueprints, maps, engineering plans.
- Ability complete reports.
- Ability to work alone with only general supervision and direction.
- Involves semi-routine, standardized work, but involves latitude for independent judgment and decision making.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city staff, and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems or other public utilities systems.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
- State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Level 3 Water Distribution System Operator License; or for a trainee, the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months from date of appointment.
- Preference may be given to those with a Valid Class “B” Commercial Florida Driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
