Performs skilled mechanical and electronic work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic parking meters, multi space meters as well as mechanical maintenance of other parking related equipment.   Duties also include sorting and counting of parking related revenue from meters that is necessary and applicable for bank processing.  Work is performed under direct supervision and is reviewed while in progress and at completion for accuracy and results obtained.  
  • Inspects parking meters to ensure proper functioning. 
  • Repairs and services defective and damaged electronic mechanical components of parking related equipment by disassembling clock and timer mechanisms for cleaning, adjusting and repair; performs coin check; calibration check for proper timing and adjusts as necessary.
  • Operates hand held computer for programming, inventory, audit and maintenance of electronic meters and master meters.
  • Maintains records and completes paperwork in certifying meter accuracy.
  • Cleans, repairs and paints meter housings.
  • Repairs or replaces parking meter posts as required; cuts length of pipe for use as meter standards, straightens bent poles, operates jack hammer and mixes concrete to install standard; operates cutting torch to remove poles.
  • Repairs and replaces broken parts and notifies Supervisor about damaged, missing or vandalized meters.
  • Assists with light mechanical repairs and maintenance of parking meter equipment.
  • Inspects master meters to ensure proper functioning.  
  • Repairs and services defective and jammed master meters.  Performs preventive maintenance as necessary.
  • Uses hand tools to perform routine meter repairs by disassembling and determining source of malfunction and then repairing meter.
  • Replaces jewels, adjusts hair springs and balances wheels in mechanical meters; cleans, lubricates and reassembles timer and parking meter mechanically.
  • Performs preventative maintenance (battery change out), replaces electronic boards and solder connections; insure cash keys and credit/debit cards are working properly; check for accurate timing in electronic meters.
  • Installs, programs, troubleshoots and replaces internal boards and communication parts as needed in master meters.
  • Inventories electric meters and parts and recommend replacement parts, equipment and signage for operation.
  • Maintains parking meter shop.
  • Maintains equipment, such as compressors and generating equipment needed to perform job.
  • Collects money from meters using established procedures.
  • Assists with counting coin and currency and preparation of bank deposits.
  • Installs single space meters, master meters, sign poles and signage.
  • Installs pavement striping on roadways and parking areas as directed.
  • Installs and repairs vault locks and combination protocol, key locks (spring loaded or gravity feed locks).
  • Assists with traffic control in and around public parking garages.
  • May be required to perform cashiering duties during special events.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.
  • Performs related work as required for this position description only.

REQUIRED
High School Diploma plus one (1) year of mechanical or electronic experience, preferably in meter maintenance or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Florida Driver's License required.
 
PREFERRED
Three (3) years of mechanical or electronic experience, preferably in meter maintenance.
 
Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  The scheduled work days and assigned work hours will vary to include nights and weekends.

Veteran's Preference: An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers (DD214) and meet eligibility requirements as stipulated by the Florida Statutes.

All successful applicants will be required to pass an extensive background which may include criminal history searches, driving history checks, credit report, courthouse searches, education verification, employment verification, professional license verification, or other search methods as deemed necessary for the position. In addition, the applicant will be required to undergo a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, prior to appointment.
 
 EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES:  The City of Hollywood has an Ordinance which regulates the employment of relatives of City employees.   Effective January 28, 2008, a relative may only be hired under the following additional conditions:
  
  • The relative must have competed in an appropriate examination process as determined by Human Resources and be placed on a civil service eligibility list;
  • The relative must be among the top three ranked candidates available on the certified eligibility list unless expanded by the Civil Service Board;
  • The Department or Office Director and the Director, Human Resources must demonstrate that it is in the best interests of the City of Hollywood to hire the relative of a public officer or employee.
As of 12/15/2005 the City will require all newly hired employees to sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last year prior to submission of application and will continue to be a non-user of tobacco products throughout employment with the City of Hollywood.
