Job Summary

Under close supervision, performs various tasks related to the maintenance of City owned

roads, facilities, beaches and all areas within the City’s rights-of way, as assigned. Employees in this class are responsible for the performance of manual, unskilled work at city owned and maintained properties. Supervision is received through superiors who give general direction as to job requirements.

Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities

  • Collects trash and debris from city-maintained properties; loads vehicles with trash and debris; disposes of trash and debris.
  • Cleans restrooms; provides minor maintenance to city-maintained facilities; performs minor landscaping to include but is not limited to trimming hedges, weeding, and planting.
  • Removes sand and debris from city maintained properties walking areas and streets.
  • Helps hand load and unload tools and equipment from delivery vehicles.
  • Helps set up and remove Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) devices as directed.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with all members of the assigned crew to accomplish required working assignments and City projects.
  • Performs related work as required for this position description only.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Required

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred

One (1) year of experience working in the maintenance field.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the use of common garden and construction tools.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting supplies.
  • Ability to perform arduous manual labor in a variety of climatic conditions.
  • Ability to lift 60 lbs. on a routine basis with or without help.
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to represent the City effectively and positively in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation/gender identity.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

Work Environment

Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals, chemicals and other hazards.

The Examination

Evidence of a GED test score is required if submitted for high school diploma. Additional Information

All successful applicants will be required to pass an extensive background which may include criminal history searches, driving history checks, credit report, courthouse searches, education verification, employment verification, professional license verification, or other search methods as deemed necessary for the position. In addition, the applicant will be required to undergo a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, prior to appointment.

EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES: The City of Hollywood has an Ordinance which regulates the employment of relatives of City employees. Effective January 28, 2008, a relative may only be hired under the following additional conditions:

  • The relative must have competed in an appropriate examination process as determined by Human Resources and be placed on a civil service eligibility list;
  • The relative must be among the top three ranked candidates available on the certified eligibility list unless expanded by the Civil Service Board;
  • The Department or Office Director and the Director, Human Resources must demonstrate that it is in the best interests of the City of Hollywood to hire the relative of a public officer or employee.

As of 12/15/2005 the City will require all newly hired employees to sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last year prior to submission of application and will continue to be a non-user of tobacco products throughout employment with the City of Hollywood.
