Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assists in the enforcement of some Federal, State, and County Laws and City ordinances.
- Performs preliminary investigations of crimes minor crimes.
- Responds to traffic situations; handles traffic control until the problem is resolved.
- Conducts ongoing community relations activities, providing information and assistance to the general public.
- Safely operates an assigned vehicle, checks daily for care and maintenance of vehicle and all department assigned vehicles.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Under the general supervision of the Police Department, the objective of the position is to provide support for all components of the Homestead Police Department as needed.
- Employees in this classification perform non-routine clerical, investigative and minor police-related duties.
- Position is responsible for preparing police reports, responding to calls for assistance, investigating motor vehicle crashes, areas of the City and facilities as directed, and issuing traffic and parking citations for infractions.
- Work is performed on assigned shifts, which may vary.
- Assists police officers in any nonhazardous situation which does not involve physical apprehension.
- Directs traffic at various locations including accident scenes, sites of fires, and other details.
- Provides emergency first aid to injured, if required.
- Utilized for nonhazardous area searches and perimeters.
- Assists in maintaining order in crowds, parades, funerals, and other public gatherings.
- Testifies in court as required.
- Works at the desk and prepares reports, maintains records, answers telephone, and other clerical and administrative duties as required.
- Gives advice and general information to the public.
- Makes daily contacts with businesses and citizens within the assigned work areas.
- Attend court hearings when required.
- Participate in community events when required.
- Handles courier duties as required.
Type Of Appointment/Work Hours
- Full-time/Regular in-person position.
- Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week usually consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day or four (4) days of ten (10) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.
- Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.

Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years or older.
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
- Nature of the job requires occasional physical exertion under sometimes adverse conditions.
- Possess good physical conditioning and physical ability to perform duties as evidenced by the ability to pass a class "A" physical examination.
- Ability to communicate effectively, as well as follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to learn geographic locations within the City.
- Some knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment is preferred.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must successfully complete the Police Service Aide Academy (nine weeks).
- Applicants cannot be convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Must pass a background investigation, which includes, but is not limited to, criminal history screening, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and Driver’s License review.
