Description
Performs a variety of routine seasonal park maintenance duties.
Examples of Duties
- Assists with routine park maintenance including trash collection, mowing, trimming, raking, field striping/grooming, and other related duties; performs landscaping duties like mulching, weeding, edging, and pruning as needed.
- Assists with custodial duties including cleaning restrooms, cleaning concession buildings, and may be required to assist with general cleaning of the Hopewell Community Center; replenishes toiletries, soap, air freshener, and sanitizer as needed.
- Assists with opening and locking park facilities including access gates, restroom buildings, storage buildings, and athletic fields.
- Performs routine safety inspections and completes inspection logs; reports maintenance concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor; performs immediate corrective action for patron safety.
- Operates motor vehicle during normal duties; may be required to operate hand-held power equipment including trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, and other handheld equipment.
- Assists with department programs and events as support staff; assists with transportation of equipment and supplies; performs other duties as assigned.
- Assist with the organization and implementation of special events coordinated by the Department of Recreation and Parks and other city departments; may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and in times of emergency (activation of the city’s Emergency Operations Center).
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Ability to read and write
- Previous experience working in a facility or grounds maintenance position
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
VA driver’s license
Knowledge:
- General knowledge of grounds maintenance, landscaping, or other related field
Skills:
- General customer service skills
- General reading and writing to complete maintenance logs and safety inspections
Abilities:
- Physical ability to perform strenuous labor tasks for extended periods of time in outdoor conditions
- Ability to work a rotating schedule including weekends and some weeknights

- Work is performed primarily outdoors and is exposed to extreme heat, cold, noise, odors, dust and inclement weather.
