What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time ALS/Firefighter position at City of Hopewell?
Performs intermediate protective services work primarily providing emergency medical services on an ambulance. Performs inspections, prevention, and public safety education services, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

- Responds to emergency calls and performs emergency medical services including basic and advanced life support.
- Participates in continuing training and instruction program via individual study of technical materials and attending scheduled drills and classes to maintain physical fitness and agility.
- Drives and/or operates various medical apparatus; ensures that emergency vehicles are completely stocked and maintained in a safe and efficient operational condition.
- Performs station duties such as daily unit checks, equipment maintenance and cleaning of station and grounds.
- Performs non-emergency public services such as lift assists, stand-by for events, river duties on fire boat, etc., as needed.
- Provides public safety education services to the community (makes presentations, gives station tours, speaks to outside groups and schools).
- Supports emergency management activities and services as needed
- Conducts emergency pre-planning, entry, exit procedures, and hazard/life safety awareness.
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
- Virginia or National Registry EMT Intermediate or Paramedic certification upon hire
- Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with zero or plus points.
- Must meet and maintain training and education requirements for position.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of advanced life support equipment, practices, and protocols.
- Knowledge of the process of identifying hazardous materials, as well as their risks and protective actions.
