SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator performs activities of the Public Works department, including street, sewer, and water maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs general maintenance and repair of street, water, sewer, including winter operations.
- Operates various heavy vehicles and equipment, including maintainers, pay loaders, trucks and plows.
- Performs sanitary and storm sewer line maintenance, including catch basins and manholes; repairs curb stop boxes and water leaks.
- Performs water system infrastructure maintenance, including gate valves, hydrants, wells and water towers.
- Cleans and unplugs sewer lines or storm drains.
- Maintains sanitary and storm sewer lift stations, including all internal components.
- Performs sign maintenance, repair and replacement.
- Repairs mail boxes and boulevards; removes snow fences.
- Performs concrete, asphalt, curb and gutter and gravel road repairs and maintenance; patches potholes.
- Performs snow and ice removal of City streets and sidewalks.
- Performs light maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs mowing and tree trimming.
- Removes street lights and poles.
- Assists with emergency operations planning, including winter operations and spring flood preparedness and operations.
- Assists with scheduling City infrastructure repairs and maintenance.
- Utilizes the City’s software to data enter all work activities; creates and completes work orders; data enters completed work orders.
- Assists with the preparation of the City’s Annual Water Report and Usage Report; monitors water testing results.
- Works safely, follows safe work practices, and identifies and reports unsafe work conditions.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience in public works or a related field.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
- Water/Wastewater I and II certification or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
- Confined space entry certification or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
- FEMA IS Course 100, 200 or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
- Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, subordinates, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations.
- Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Work is performed within City facilities and job site locations that will require sitting, squatting, bending, crawling, climbing, and reaching. The incumbent may be required to occasionally perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Activity may involve being in and around moving equipment. Activity is subject to weather conditions of the seasons, fumes, gasses, and exposure to dust. Incumbent may be also exposed to hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
