DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Supervises the operations and activities of the Animal Shelter, including the work of Kennel Technicians, Animal Care Technicians and Senior Animal Care Technicians in the humane care, handling and sheltering of animals within the facility in accordance with BARCs policies and procedures. This role will be expected to drive continuous improvements in the areas under their control, with a strong focus on effectiveness, excellent customer service, and best practices in animal welfare.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively manage -spend time working with the team - the performance of our Animal Care Technicians, including training, coaching, providing feedback and recognition utilizing our teams Core Values.
- Responsible for staying current in the field through continued education and professional development.
- Identify areas for professional growth and develop applicable training opportunities for staff on a regular basis.
- Developing and teaching current or new, approved, training classes for the team in the area of animal welfare, including but not limited to: animal handling, animal behavior, customer service, team building and/or disease control.
- Ensure the day-to-day physical and psychological well-being of animals in the shelter.
- Oversees disease control, sanitation, animal handling and customers service policies and procedures are implemented.
- Promotes and embodies the teams Core Values.
- Educates, teaches, reviews and evaluates employees in the areas of: disease control, sanitation, low stress handling, and customer service.
- Performs employee evaluations and issues corrective discipline as assigned.
- Coordinates and work with other departments as necessary.
- Ensures animals receive treatment as directed by professional veterinary staff.
- Ensures animals are handled in accordance with BARCs Animal Handling policy and staff training.
- Ensures accuracy of animal shelter management system/database.
- Ensures Kronos records are accurate and all attendance concerns are addressed in timely manner.
- Ensures accuracy of daily shelter inventory.
- Supervises and may perform euthanasia of animals as necessary.
- Provides public education as necessary.
- Familiar with using positive reinforcement techniques to modify animal behavior and low stress animal handling techniques.
- Responsible for completion of teams annual HEAR review and goal setting.
- This position may be asked to perform other duties as required for smooth and efficient shelter/kennel operations including, but not limited to, assisting with facility maintenance.
- Able to withstand repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting, and the opening and closing of our kennels.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending or lifting of moderate weight amounts (20-40 pounds). There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperatures and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
Additional education beyond the Associate degree level may be substituted for up to two years of the experience requirement.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four years of experience in a leadership, customer service, or administrative role or related experience is required.
Additional experience in an animal care role may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis, with a limit of two years.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants who have previous working knowledge in a supervisory role and able to work weekends.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
