The department delivers a wide range of services and serves as a centralized source for citizen assistance to resolve neighborhood concerns.
MOGPI provides comprehensive responses to juvenile delinquency and gang activity through direct services, collaboration, outreach, education and policy development. Specific services include intervention case management, informational presentations and training, incident response and mediation, summer and out-of-school programs, and hosting of community events and activities.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under the Mayor's Office of Gang Prevention and Intervention the Counselor position will work to perform functions related to the operation of programs and services. Interviews, counsels, screens and assesses clients for social services provided by the city and provides referrals to the local service community.
The Counselor duties will include but are not limited to :
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a social or behavioral science, such as Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or Counseling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of professional experience in counseling or related social services work are required.
A Master's degree in a social or behavioral science may be substituted for the experience requirement.
LICENSE REQUIRMENTS
None
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants who are able to speak, read, and write Spanish and have experience working with high-risk youth / families. Strong case management / outreach skills are highly desired. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) is a plus.
