DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe General Services Department seeks a qualified Maintenance Mechanic I to perform a variety of semi-skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of City of Houston buildings and physical plants, including but not limited to : Performing inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrication, and repairs on machinery such as pumps, boilers, air conditioning units, meters, and air compressors.Perform light carpentry and plumbing repairs.Uses hand tools and special equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, lawn mowers, weed eaters, and other lawn equipment.Keeps records of maintenance and repair work performed.Record and maintain tool, equipment, and parts inventories.Reports unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment.Will drive to and from various work sites.Perform other duties as assigned or required.WORKING CONDITIONSThe position requires stooping, bending and / or lifting of items of up to 80 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are occasional discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture / wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve occasional exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as oil sand cleaning solutions.Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION REQUIREMENTSSpecialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSNo experience is required.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSValid Texas driver's license in compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
