DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The General Services Department (GSD) is seeking a Security Officer Investigator who will patrol all Houston Public Works (HPW) facilities on a daily basis to perform security observations.
This position will also perform the following duties:
- Responds to all emergencies involving any HPW property or employees.
- Perform background checks on employees, contractors, subcontractors and vendors.
- Coordinates departmental security activities with other law enforcement officers in the community.
- Will drive to investigate incidents at all HPW facilities and assist with administrative investigations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal. Requires the ability to make simple gross motor responses within large tolerances.
This is a Tier 1 position, which requires reporting during emergencies and/or special events and may require night/weekend/multiple day duty. This position also requires passing a criminal background check and obtaining and maintaining federally mandated security clearances where required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in law enforcement or the security field are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preferences will be given to applicants who have worked in a highly stressful environment, i.e., law enforcement, security, military, an emergency room or emergency management office. Ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively, often in tense situations, with all levels of internal and external customers. Professional experience in investigative roles and de-escalation in a working environment is a desired plus.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
