Broadband Technician (Level 3)
Current Utility Workers Contract Hourly Pay Range: $31.24 - $39.63 per hour (depending upon qualifications)
Class Summary
Under general supervision, the Broadband Technician performs skilled work in constructing, operating and maintaining the City of Hudson’s broadband fiber network. This includes testing, repairing, and installing various broadband equipment and components, sometimes near energized power lines. Responsibilities encompass a wide range of activities, including fiber optic splicing, aerial and underground construction, and the operation of specialized tools and equipment. The position may require assisting Lineworkers and performing duties of lower or equal classifications. Works under the close supervision of the Assistant Superintendent or their designee for daily and/or weekly task assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class. Allocation of positions to this class will be determined on the amount of time spent in performing the primary duties.)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, stand, walk, and handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to work with arms extended or overhead continuously for thirty (30) minutes and/or extended periods of time. The employee is regularly required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Work may involve extended periods of standing, walking, pole and ladder climbing.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions for extended periods of time, with some conditions being very adverse. The employee is frequently exposed to hazardous conditions and is frequently exposed to vibration or risk of electric shock.
Minimum Qualifications
Work requires graduation from an accredited high school or GED and the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Ohio Class A commercial driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months from appointment.
Must possess, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from appointment, a current CPR/AED
certification.

- Fiber Optic Work: Terminate, splice, and test fiber optics, including loose tube and ribbon fiber. Proficient in fusion splicing, troubleshooting, and using tools such as power meters and optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDR). Design and layout simple build plans and identify materials needed to complete a job.
- Aerial and Underground Construction: Install aerial fiber, splice closures, and perform underground tasks, such as pulling cable through conduits and repairing damaged infrastructure (e.g., vaults, pedestals, and conduits).
- Equipment Operation: Operate hoists, drills, portable generators, wire or fiber stringing machines, forklifts, and other equipment in compliance with city and state regulations. Place and remove barricades, flags, and warning signals around works zones and equipment as required. Setup and perform work on ladders and aerial equipment from elevated heights.
- Maintenance and Inventory: Maintain inventory of tools and materials, ensuring proper stock levels for assignments. Ensure equipment is kept clean and operational, report any malfunctions and assist with basic repairs as needed.
- Safety and Emergency Response: Adheres to all safety rules and regulations of the City, including the National Electric Code and National Safety Codes. Assist in firefighting efforts for electrical fires and downed power lines.
- Documentation and Communication: Accurately document work performed, including production tracking and job site records. Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and customers.
- Training and Supervision: Direct and train assigned employees on fiber installations and safety practices. May work alone or as part of a crew.
- Must follow directions from supervisor and perform work reliably and independently.
- May take a regular scheduled on-call shift and respond to trouble calls in an approved amount of response time.
- May perform other duties as assigned, which may include working outside the Broadband Department.
- Must provide a high level of customer service by being courteous, responsive, respectful and helpful in all interactions with staff, superiors and the general public.
- Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, colleagues, co-workers, residents, City officials, property owners, vendors and contractors.

- A general understanding of fiber network design and terminology.
- Experience in fiber optic troubleshooting, splicing, restoration, and installation experience.
- Proficient in using fiber tools and test equipment, including fusion splicers, power meters, and OTDRs.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics, weights, measures, and the ability to make simple mathematical calculations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and splice diagrams.
- Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of safety practices and principles for equipment operation, loading and unloading of materials and equipment, and emergency procedures, including the operation and application of firefighting equipment installed in the properties or trucks.
- Ability to work at elevated heights.
- Knowledge and proficient use of basic computer-based software including document writing, email, web browsers, etc.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently, or in teams.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with residents, colleagues, and contractors.
- Must demonstrate tact, judgment, pleasant manner and neat appearance.
