Job Description
The objective of the Lifeguard is to provide customer service through education and enforcement of all pool rules while overseeing the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility; the Lifeguard also prevents and responds to accidents; eliminates or minimizes hazardous situations.
Job Responsibilities

- Enforces pool rules and health regulations to maintain safety and handles customer problems regarding the same.
- Monitors and warns pool patrons of safety hazards to prevent accidents or injury.
- Follows correct emergency procedures in case of accident or drowning; including rescuing; resuscitation and first aid administration.
- Participates in maintenance of cleanliness and minor maintenance of all pool facilities including deck; bathhouse; restrooms and pool drains.
- Attends training sessions and staff meetings as assigned.
- Supports the operations of the division/department by effectively applying knowledge to problem-solve.
- Handles public concerns; problems; or suggestions in a calm; professional and courteous manner.
- Ensures that all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adhering to all City safety regulations.
- Fosters teamwork with supervisors; co-workers and all City employees.
- Respectfully assists citizens by answering questions and explaining the responsibilities of the division/department.
- Assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment and in other duties; as appropriate or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have knowledge of water safety practices and usage of water safety equipment.
- Current lifeguard and CPR for Professional Rescue and First Aid Certifications; preferred.
- Previous experience as a lifeguard; preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; preferred.
Required Abilities
- Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
- Ability to use good judgement; remain calm and effectively handle problems.
- Ability to interact tactfully and professionally with emotionally distraught citizens.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Required Knowledge of:
- Applicable local; State; and Federal laws; codes; regulations; and ordinances.
- Safety policies; procedures and practices.
Language Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff; supervisor and the public.
- Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions; general correspondence; MSDS sheets; safety manuals; traffic signs and warning labels.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition; subtraction; multiplication; division).
